First, if they're not doing it properly keep real close to them.  And gradually get farther away once
they understand what u want them to do, and they do it correctly.   Are u doing this on lead ?

1)  Heel or fuss your dog, do this in parts.  When u start walking SLOW  tell them to sitz and give
the dog a short correction with the leash.  THEY SHOULD UNDERSTAND THIS MEANS TO SIT
Start just a few feet away, repeat sit
as your walking back to them, do NOT touch the dog.   If they stay sitting reward with a piece of food
repeat   "GOOD SITZ"  and walk backwards to where u were.  This is pretty much how I do it.

If your dog does a good long sit,  this should not be hard to accomplish.

Try this and see if it helps

Watch Ivan's Obedience without conflict videos. Best way to teach any dog obedience.
