I would like to know opinions regarding who are the best GSD (show line) in Germany, from VA through V10, who are transmitting great temperament.

I share OSO surprise regarding Zamp and Quantum

by gsdlvr2 on 19 October 2006 - 23:10

OK, I have to ask, why are you all surprised about Zamp and Quantum being included?

Received an e mail from Zamps owners thanking me for my congrats. I think the familie Dietrich worked very hard both daughters Julia and Lisa to get him there. On the other hand Quantum has very good credentials.

Fred Lanting's critique of the BSZS bitework is here: http://www.aniwa.fr/en/chien/Grand_Public/document/102350/126430/index.htm To summarize/paraphrase what he says about the VA dogs' courage tests, it's basically as follows: Zamp and Quantum were not convincing, and neither were Pakros and Quenn. He liked Orbit, Dux and Odin's work. Vegas he found OK, but worries about his brother earning only a "sufficient" and the father Pakros being weak.

As for my personal experience, it's limited to one 7-month-old puppy: my Orbis vom Kirschental, out of Dux. But I will say this: this little guy is very outgoing, has tremendous confidence and fears nothing. Loud noises like fireworks get a glance and nothing more. As for his drives, in the past few weeks we graduated from his puppy tugs to a bite pillow, and he goes NUTS over it. Good deep bites, and he'll fight me like a tiger for it: I can lift him off his feet and he hangs right on. If I down him at distance and then free him up for a bite, I have to make sure I'm positioned correctly, because a couple of times I've been sloppy with my footwork and he just about put me on my ass launching into me - and I weigh 235 lbs., and he's not even 70 lbs. yet. Yesterday I introduced some mild to moderate stick hits - nothing that would cause any pain, but more than enough for him to notice. He just fought harder. We'll wait until spring to do any helper work because I want to work his obedience more before he gets too big, but I don't foresee any problems at all moving on to manwork, because he's cocky, confident and tough. So I'd say you could do a lot worse than the Hill vom Farbenspiel line through Dux, if you're looking for character and drive in show lines.

Are we talking about clear headed and outgoing type temperament, friendly towards strangers etc. OR bitework abilities (noticing the comments on working abilities)?? I "think" the word "temperament" means something slightly different across the Atlantic. At our SchH 1 trial the German Judge said "its so nice to see a 6yr old dog with so much drive and temperament" can someone clarify the word "temperament" for me, lol. Thanks, Melanie
