Hi, we have a 9month old German Shepard/Black lab puppy. He just started limping last week, so we took him to the vet and she said to give him low dose aspirin. I have read many posts and do believe that he has Pano. He is 78.4 lbs, so a BIG BOY. I do think he is just growing so fast, that his muscles are stretching out. If any other advice, please let me know... Thanks

What are you feeding?

by BlackMaverick on 16 April 2012 - 02:04

Puppy food...Large breed for Eukanuba... I read some posts and mentioned to my fiance that maybe we switch to adult food.

He is a Germ Shep/Black lab mix. What would be the best adult food to start transitioning him to????

Honestly, I transition all my puppies at 4 months to adult food. I have had experience feeding Eukanuba puppy this late with the same results as you. I am sure some will come along and disagree but that is fine.

I hope he gets to feeling better soon as pano can cause some minor depression and plenty of pain.

Good luck.

I agree. I have had experience with a fast growing GS pup with growth issues, since then I have transitioned to adult food early and have never had any growth issues since.

As for which is best......there are a lot of great foods. Origen is amongst the top foods. Many here feed Kirkland Lamb and Rice or Natures Domain both from Costco. I used Kirkland Lamb and Rice exclusively for 14 years and just last year switched all of my dogs to Nature's Domain. I have nothing but great things to say about both foods. My dogs do very well on both of them. They are not too of the line foods but are better than Eukanuba, Iams, Science diet etc.,. Nature's Domain is comparable to Taste of the Wild which is an excellent food. In fact both ND and TOTW are made by the same company tye fOrmulation differences between the two are marginal at best. Otherwise if you are up to it I suggest raw or a mix of raw and kibble. I do exclusively kibble with raw meaty bones now but when my two youngest were pups I was doing about 50/50 raw and kibble with excellent results. You just have to be sure to correctly space the meals as kibble and raw digest at a different rate. You do not want to feed them at the same time. I was doing kibble in the morning and raw for supper. It worked great for us.

I've been using Nature's Domain (turkey and sweet potato) for the past 3 years and am pleased with it. Its about 30$ for 35 lbs..... plus the membership fees for Costco. I've also used Taste of the Wild - (purple bag - serria mountain) and have also had good results with this product. its more expensive at 47$ for 30 lbs. I've used Orijen and but its just so very expensive at 80+$ for 29 lbs. Its also very high in protein...
