at what age can you start giving pups raw bones to chew on

by nickryan on 18 October 2006 - 17:10

it varies on what type of bone i would recomend a beef maro bone at about 3 months

by Laris on 18 October 2006 - 17:10

I had 3 litters and I started all at around 3 weeks old, as soon as they start eating solid food. I grind up chicken wing/neck/carcass in the food processor and feed it to the pups. No problem at all. All my dogs are "BARF" fed. But I had to caution that a friend's Golden Retriver died from bone. I suggest you start with chicken neck, lamb ribs/spine which do not splinter.

I use small pieces of raw chicken necks at six (6) weeks of age, and nothing larger than this for at least six (6) months. Raw bones are hard for me to obtain, so I stay with the chicken necks. Bob-O

Laris Did your friengs Golden die from eating a raw bone or cooked bone? Do you know?

by MJJ on 18 October 2006 - 18:10

he is 4 months and teething so i figured maybe a bone would keep him busy for a while

chicken bones are best for pups. beef bones etc. are too hard and contain improper calcium phorphorus ratios.

My dog loves his raw marrow bones from our butcher. I've been giving them to him since he was 10 weeks old - he's 7 months now. He will eat one every day. They are raw, and do not splinter. His teeth are beautiful.

Bob-O I agree. Raw Chicken necks for puppies and young dogs. They love them!

I give my pups chicken 1/4's from the time they start eating solids. I throw a whole 1/4 in with the litter and let them tug it apart. Of course at first they don't eat the bones, they just strip them clean. Mom gets the raw bones and few scraps the pups leave behind. At about 5 weeks when the teeth are coming in good, they chew the bones down to nothing. About this time, I feed the pups seperate pieces so they do not fight over or have to rush to eat their food.
