As some of you know, at night, I usually stetch out in the recliner by Beau's (the GSD puppy, now 12wks old) exercise pen, to sleep by him. It keeps him calm, and he hasn't had any accidents in the pen because everytime he wakes up or cries, I rush him out to potty.
ANYWAY, last night (it's now 4am) I didn't do that. I was selfish. I went to sleep in my own bed, in the other room. I went to bed around 10pm-ish and usually Beau will wake me about 1am for his first potty break. Well, so I was sleeping and woke up to go to the bathroom. I looked at my cell phone, it was 3:30am and Beau didn't wake me! I was startled and rushed out to the dining room where Beau's pen is. He's passed out sleeping and there, in my recliner, "watching over him" was Delilah, the pitbull. She wagged her tail slightly, she was still have asleep. She had her head over the arm of the recliner, staring into Beau's pen, watching him all night for me, while I slept.
I wish I had gotten a picture of them. It was precious.
While yes, a dog is a dog, and certainly not cabable of the vast range of feelings a human has (though I swear they DO feel most of the same ones we do) I can only think what a miracle it was that I had witnessed.
Lilah is a pretty laid back girl, she would've been passed out in the bed with me, snoring on the pillow next to mine (she does this when my husband's away driving truck) but she didn't follow me to bed last night.
I was pretty tired and didn't think much of it. And this morning, I come out and see that. I almost cried at how beautiful of a sight it was, my 'daughter' watching over my 'son' - presumably so that I could actually get a decent night of sleep.
What a blessed mother I am to have such special dogs.
For those of you who don't know, Lilah - the pitbull was a rescue from the Humane Society. She was a stray picked up off the streets, severely underweight, had a lifethreatening allergic reaction to all the fleas she was infested with, and massive amounts of hair loss from the dermatitis. Now, she's been here since November 2011 and ALL of her hair has grown back, she's healthy as can be and obviously paying me back for saving her.
Let this be said that dogs DO know when their lives have been changed, and they respond accordingly, I think.
Here's a picture of the pair taken a few days ago.
