I have several albums of win photos that were taken at some of the first shows my local all breed club put on in the 50's through the 70's and there are a few GSDs. This is one from 1964 that according to the album also had a SchH III:

I also have a picture of his sire who evidently was a SchH III as well. Just thought some folks might be interested in seeing the old photo :-)

He's beautiful and built to work. He's what I remember and had as a boy growing up, and as a young man before all of of this SL/WL split came along. He's similar to what I had in the Troll Richtenbach lines

Beautiful dog! He sure has wonderful substance and solid topline. I think his pasterns could be a wee bit shorter. Hmmm-so why did people think they needed to "improve" on this? Or maybe the real question is - why wasn't this good enough for the judges? Just asking.

Now, that's the sort of GSD I think of as a REAL GSD! (Okay, it's the type I grew up with...)

Wow, he's the spitting image of his sire!

Feet are flat, too, but that's a very common problem with American lines.

Interesting that he's linebred on Rolf, the dog everone says is responsible for all the dippy, weak backs, which resulted in the Martin brothers (and others) favouring the roach backs. I don't see a thing wrong with his back, though he could use just a tad more wither!

I don't think there was a real differentiation between American/German lines at this point. Lance, the dog commonly attributed to having started that split wasn't born until 1964. Not sure about the dippy, weak backs but Rolf was definitely responsible for some of the most god-awful croups ever...that still pop up in the breed today!

Keith, no, there wasn't, but we are still talking about the dogs that had a large influence on the American genepool, such as Troll and Axel.

And I've often heard Rolf cited as being the one responsible for weak backs. If you look at his photo, his back is as level as a table, with hardly any wither.
