Could somebody tell me if I need to order a ISO microchip from Germany or can you get them in the states.I need to put one on a pup I'm sending a friend in Germany. Thank You.

There are several ISO chips in the states- AVID has a seperate ISO, and so does Crystal, AVID's chip is universal, and Crystal is not. Careful about the rabies vaccine- the chip has to be implanted before the vaccine is given assuming that the pup is old enough.

Thanks Davinhoff, why does the chip have to be implanted first before the rabie shot? The pup is 17 weeks old.

To send a dog to Germany you must simply microchip the pup, get an export permit from the USDA office that stamps it, get a rabies certificate. There is no requirement that the pup be chipped before the rabies is given. There are strict requirements about who can sign these certificates and they must be dated, stamped, signed in ink etc. There is a fee for the USDA stamp. If you need help on exactly what you have to do to send the dog, let me know and I will send you instructions and where to download the form you need etc. You must have the export form signed by a USDA approved veterinarian here. There are some other tricks too to know about and thus save yourself some heartburn.
Avid does have an ISO universal chip and it is available here in the states. I just chipped two dogs last month who were exported, unaccompanied, to their owners now living in Germany.

The chipping before the Rabies vaccine applies to places that have an import scheme like the UK, not the rest of Europe. For Germany the dog needs to be tattoed OR chipped (for the time being, chipping will become mandatory later). If chipped it has to be with an ISO certified chip. Aks your vet to order an ISO chip, some of the larger clinics often have some in stock.
You still need a regular health cert in addition to the Rabies cert. It does not say, but still applies. At the very least the airlines require a general health cert for travel within 10 days. The Rabies Import cert is good for 4 months.

Thanks for your help.....If you get the rabie shot this week do you have to wait 21 days before you can ship the 17 week old pup to Germany?

I should add that the dog is going to a US army base in Frankfurt.

What is the ISO microchip. and what is the difference between it and the Home Again Chip?

by blueshep on 18 October 2006 - 04:10
I think it's the frequency........I was told the iso chip reads quicker.

ISO - International Standards Organization. Basically it is an internationally recognized quality control certification that helps in standardization of processes. So that company A in one country can purchase materials and products from company B in another coutry and make sure all is compatible. These days a very common industry standard, especially anything concerning manufacture of products and components.
An ISO chip is standardarized so that an ISO chip reader can identify any ISO certified chips regardless of origin. Otherwise a place like customs would have to have several different chip readers to deal with all the different formats that are out there.
If the pup is tattooed, no need for a chip (for now).
Blueshep, yes its 21 days after the Rabies vaccination now.
