when giving out conformation ratings or do they just look at dog in front of them?

Depends on the show and the judge. Not as much in the local shows as the national events. You are often asked to have the pedigree ringside. I've had many judges ask to see the pedigree and may stew over them for final placement. Check out the judges comments in the Urma books and you can see what was taken into consideration in the placements from each judge.

I have never had a judge ask me (as a handler or participant) for any info at the time that my dog is presented, except the dog's age. However, when working in the ring with the judges, yes I have seen judges look at and consider pedigrees. I believe Randy's right, it matters much more for bigger shows, or even for the working classes of smaller shows, than for local shows or puppy classes for instance.

out of principle and common sense, the info should not have to be present, lends itself to misinterpretation of what the judge is looking at to assign 1st place, doesn't it? Then again, maybe that's what the SV want to begin with.
