I would be a lot more enthusiastic about using microchips if I knew they wouldn't migrate in the body, I've known at least 2 dogs whose chips ended up in the foreleg and one whose chip was moving down the back of the dog.
I think that a combination of both ear tattoo and microchip is the best way to go.
I've known two different families who specifically did NOT want their puppies microchipped. Has anyone else run into this situation? Anyone ever lost puppy sales because a potential owner didn't want a pup that had a chip in it?

If what brynjulf says is true, 30000 chips, and no cancer, I would think microchips are protective against cancer. GSD's do get cancer, amazing that it was not seen in the microchipped ones.
There is no scientific reason, to get cancer from a chip.

When I get a new dog/puppy, I always Microchip. I can justify microchipping because I would rather have my dog chipped because if they get lost and a shelter finds them, hopefully I'll get that phone call, but if I didn't chip because of a few stories about cancer, I'd never know if my dog would ever make it back to me.
There are extreme stories for sure, and it's very confusing to see these kind of things and worry that when you're trying to do right by your dog you might be giving them cancer, but really there are so many variances in each story it's never 100% sure to say it was the Microchip which caused cancer.
I'll keep Microchipping until there is some concrete evidence, I hope you are feeling better about microchipping because if your dog/pup's already been microchipped, you'll make yourself sick worrying, so try not to worry, and once in a while, run your hand over injection site to see if there's swelling or fluid pockets, anything not normal :)
Good luck Sara, try not to worry :)
