what is the best way to register a kennel name?

by Michael10 on 14 October 2006 - 22:10

It depends what country you are in? In the United Sates you can register a kennel name through Schutzhund U.S.A if you are a member or the American Kennel Club which has very specific rules that must be met. Whichever organization you will be registering puppies through would be the best organization to register the kennel name with.

Registering a kennel name with the AKC requires the applicant(s) must have bred at least 5 registered litters in the past 5 years or have owned stud dogs that produced at least 40 registered litters in the past 10 years. Among other regulations seen here: http://www.akc.org/reg/kennelnames.cfm Regards, Melanie

Stephenitz, You better consider what it is you intend to do with your litters. You can not simply register them with United Schutzhund Clubs of American and have any organization accept that. Tell us more about your intentions. As a minimum, you probably must register the pups with AKC. Then you can decide whether to register with other organizations. Without AKC registration, if a dog was born here, it will not be able to do many things.

Since AKC has registration authority of pure bred dogs in America, it is my understanding that USA registrations are just an addendum to the AKC registrations(I don't do USA, so I cannot say for sure). If you wanted to take your dog, say to Germany for trials/show, I do not think they would recognize the stand alone USA registration. They would however accept the 4 generation pedigree from the AKC. I would think through what I was doing before I just registered with the USA. Is that your only option, or could you register with both? I admit, I don't know if that is possible or not, but if I had to choose one or the other, depending on what my long term goals were, I would probably go with the AKC. Stephen

I also am somewhat unclear as to acceptance. It is possible to register with both. It seems to me that things have changed in recent years since the inception of WDA which would seem to give AKC an air of legitimacy that they could never claim. I believe that the GSDCA has seen the success of USA over the years and has remade themselves to compete. Unfortunately many remember that it was they who ruined the American breed. I believe they are tolerated for the sake of the NASS and the requisite AKC registration. Bear in mind that SV has not lowered their standards to that of AKC so the old breeding requirements remain in effect for international registration.
