Does anyone know what determines litter size and if there is a correlation from one litter to the next? Thank you

First of all it is dependent on the number of eggs to be fertilized, second the appropriate number of healthy sperm to infiltrate the ripen eggs at the proper time. The female has a finite number of eggs at birth, so as they are expelled by th ovaries during her season(how ever many a number that is) and fertilized gives you number of puppies. There is no magic pill or supplements to increase egg production, but proper care of the female can help produce healty eggs able to sustain life. Stephen

My female just had a litter of 19. Three were still born and three died 2 weeks later. I gave my female 2 extra vitamins a day and feed her a high protein diet full of meat. I don't know if this played a part in how many pups she had but I do know that I have 13 beautiful, healthy 100% ddr pups. Hope this helps. Jesse Jude

There is a genetic component just as in human multiple birth. There is also a tendency for an animal in her reproductive prime (3.5-5.5yrs) and in optimal condition to have larger litters than those carrying weight or being underweight and those closer to either end of their breeding careers.

19 puppies may be a breed record? WOW, that's a lot of puppies LOL.

No ,not a record Blitzen. My friend who used to breed golden retrievers , her female had 23 live puppies ,which all lived. The female had a daughter who lived with them and was not pregnant and while hanging out with the brood, had milk come in and she nursed 1/2 of the litter.

gsdlvr2,Blitzen said breed record (GSD) but 23 pups that all survived is amazing for any breed! Also amazing is that the daughter pitched in & helped her mama.

GSDLvr2, What'd I tell you? The Goldens are Fertile Mertiles!

Anyone know of a GSD bitch that whelped more than 19 puppies?
