Saw this on the news here the other night. Weird story. Couple brings a man home from the bar (you know that is a whole 'nother story in itself) and he goes crazy on them with a pool stick.
Cops get called along with K-9. K-9 gets sent on suspect and guy still approaches so another officer shoots the suspect and the dog. I think the guy only had a pool stick our a knife.
Hopefully Slamdunc can let us know what procedure is when a dog is on a bite. Below are 2 links and 1 has a quick video. Hope the dog ends up ok.

Ace, I read the articles and it is truly an unfortunate and tragic situation. I'm not going to comment any more than to offer my condolences to the young man's family and a speedy recovery for the K-9. I do not have enough information to comment or speculate on what happened. I will say that there was a young man returning from combat who did not get the help he obviously needed and deserved. We are seeing this more and more and it needs to be rectified.

Now that's a profound statement, and I couldn't AGREE more. And it's just the tip of the iceberg.

You would think that after as many wars/conflicts this country has sent our men and now women to, the powers that be would have a handle on how to best deal with their return to "normal" life!!!!Unfortunately, this has been a serious problem through out our history.

Slam...I understand your position and not wanting to speculate.
The suspect just came back from combat? I didn't see that part in the articles.

Ace,
It was in the comments section of the article. Some of his friends and family posted.
Joan,
Military deployments and combat have changed since WW 2, Korea and Vietnam for our troops. In the past troops were sent to the front line for a bref period, maybe 90 days or so. Currently, our troops may be exposed to combat situations for months and even a year. In Iraq and Afghanistan it is not unusual to have their bases shelled every day. Going out on the road exposes them to IED's and insurgent attacks repeatedly. The human body has trouble dealing with that much stress for such a prolonged time. The PTSD our returning soldiers are suffering is very severe. Far worse than prior wars. We have seen an increase in response to suicidal subjects over the past two years, many being young men and woman recently home from oversees. It is tragic and horrible to see a person in their 20's so devastated that they just want to kill themselves. The methods are sometimes extreme and very dangerous.
Ron you are very correct, it is the tip of the iceberg and will get worse. It is very sad.

CONDOLENCES to the Law Enforcement Officer and the Police Officer-K9 who was shot by one of his own. Seems everyone here is worried about the so precious kid who was shot. WHAT ABOUT THE POLICE OFFICER WHO WAS SHOT ??? He may have been a four leg officer but still a cop.....

Wow a cop scared of a freaking cue stick!!! And a bad shot! He could have atleast shot him with a tazer or simply just take the guy down. How do you shoot your dog ! They let anyone be cops nowadays it's all about who you know!

Jim, I know what you're saying about prolonged deployment. Without the draft, there isn't the turn over available for the military to switch personnel around. They use anybody they can get and have even raised the age limits. Met a returning soldier at cargo seven years ago who said any one willing to pull the trigger was eligible, an exaggeration, but he made his point. I would just like to add that seeing WWII and Vietnam vets whacked out to the point they were unable to function in civilian life emphasizes the horrors they experienced. No adequate help for them.

Smith, it might help if you actually read both articles. Once you read the articles some of your questions will be answered.
