FYI: My friends' sister took her Daschund (sp?) in for surgery for an obstructed bowel at a local vet hospital. They removed the piece of plastic and supposedly repaired the intestine. A day or two later he became severely ill again. They called the same hospital, they were closed so they were sent to another hospital. He died shortly after arriving. The surgeon performed an autopsy and found a piece of gauze left in him and found that the intestine was not completely repaired. Dead intestine tissue was not removed and the incision was not completely sewn closed, leaving a hole where bacteria and feces leaked into his abdomen. The surgeon who found this was furious and are urging the owners to go public. He says this is not the first botched surgery he's seen from that hospital but the other(s) were settled and kept quiet. I told my friend what I thought (go public) but right now they are just beside themselves with grief. I will not post the name of the hospital on the net (unless it goes public), for people who live in South Eastern Pennsylvania...email me, GSDfan1@yahoo.com

Perfect example of needing to go public. How horrible a thing to happen. If it has happened numerous times, I hope your friends sister exposes this hospital, to keep the next animal from harm. I would be beside myself if it was my dog or cat too. As soon as I could gather my wits, I would talk to that other vet and a lawyer. I wouldn't settle for anything. NO ammount of money is going to bring that, or the others dogs back. Truly a sad story. I wish them the best. Michelle

It is up to the vet clinic that saw the dog the second time to report this incident to the State Veterinary Board. They would and should have a record of similar incidents and they will keep a record of this incident and make a determination as to negligence. Based on your description, it certainly sounds like someone has a more than valid complaint and the vet responsible should be penalized and replace the dog.

That vet had better learn to count sponges before he/she closes. I agree with Hodie, it's up to the vet clinic where this was discovered to report it to the PA state board. I do hope the the owner of this little dog reports it too and sees an attorney who is well versed in such matters.

GSDfan, I'm sorry for the death of your sisters dog. If your sister has a lawyer I would recommend to seek legal help... by the sound of it your sister has a case.

Unfortunately, such botches are not that uncommon!
