I have been reading here how many people feed their dogs a raw meat diet. I am now thinking about doing this myself. I think if i talk to the two local grocery stores I could possibly get their scraps as both have an in house butcher. How is a dogs stool on a raw diet? I know that I feed a high quality dog food and they have smaller firmer stools and low quality makes...well..we know what a low quality food does to stool. I want what is best for my dog and I was reading how feeding a raw diet virtually eliminates the need to have their teeth cleaned and how they won't have bad breath. This is an issue for me as my chihuhahua has horrible breath and has had to have teeth removed in the past and only has a few left. To feed her raw I would have to grind the meat up for her. Should I also grind bones? I could feed my GSD whole pieces but I am wondering about bones with her also. Is it safe to give her a chicken breast with the rib bones in it? Should i break all of the bones before feeding? What about beef or pork bones? (I know not to ever give cooked bones as those splinter) The more I think about it the more raw feeding makes sense to me as long as i can secure a good supply of affordable meats. That is my biggest issue where I live, if the two grocery stores won't sell me their scraps cheap I have no other options because of the driving distance to the nearest larger city and I have very limited storage space. I will have to buy meats at least once a week if not a couple times a week. Also how much should a pup eat for raw feedings? She currently eats about 4 cups of Bil-Jac kibble everyday split into 2 feedings.
How should i go about switching to raw? Slowly introduce it or just go ahead and switch to it? I would think that a slow introduction would be best but this is something I have no experience with.
Another slightly related question...what about freezer burned meat? I have a friend who had a large deep freezer and most of the meat got a bit of freezer burn on it. He offered to let me take whatever meat I wanted out of it as he is going to throw it all away. I am wondering if that would be safe and if the freezer burn would effect the nutrition of the meat? I know it doesn't taste wonderful to humans when it is like that but i can't imagine it would bother my dog as long as it is safe and still good for her.
