After finding out that my boy's sire and other relatives in the male line died young from bloat, I decided to look into a prophylactic gastropexy. I just inquired at the DFW Veterinary Surgery center about the cost for a laparoscopic gastropexy. The difference between a laparoscopic procedure and the conventional one is that it is done with only two 1/2-inch incisions (one for the scope and one for the instruments) instead of having to cut the abdomen open. They quoted me $1500-$2000 for the procedure.
Those of you who have had a gastropexy done, how much did you pay? Does this sound reasonable?

I haven't had it done on any of my dogs, but when I was at the vet's office recently, suspecting my dog may be bloating (he wasn't), we discussed the possibility of having prophylactic gastropexy done. If I remember correctly it was in the $2,000 range. I live in S. Florida.

Thats a reasonable price, when my girl bloated we paid $3000 and she ended up just staying one night instead of the 2-3 nights they wanted her to stay. She does better at home and with a background in Vet Tech I felt I could handle her better at home. Anyway we had considered this for our male I was quoted $1500-$1700 so I think thats a fair estimate that you received. How old is your dog?? If you are going to that expense I would recommend chest x-rays just to make sure there's no other issues.

When inquired at the University-best to my memory, they quoted something like $1400-1500 hundred-which method of attachment I did not inquire-one of my local vets did the surgery for $400. He did make an abdomen incision-this was on my young male. My oldest male is a survivor of GDV-hince attachment was during the emergency surgery as was the attachment on my red sable female during her surgery for foreign object obstruction.

Thought I'd update this. I contacted Texas A&M veterinary school and they quoted me $450 for the laparoscopic gastropexy. Then I contacted my local Great Dane Rescue, since Danes have the highest incidence of bloat and gastropexy is routine in Danes, and they referred me to a vet in my area that does them regularly and quoted me $350 for a non-laparoscopic surgery. Now I'm off to research laparoscopic vs. non.

Emoore: That is a great price. I wouldn't have thought to contact the rescue. I recently had my 8.5 year old female's stomach tacked after her third bloat (no twisting), but did so thru the ER. Price was $1,800.00. I would like to get my 2 younger ones done as a prevention so appreciate the lead on getting some better pricing via local rescues. I asked my vet what it would have cost if I didn't come in via emergency and she said around $1,500.00.
