Would you purchase a pup from a lineage of a Grandsire whose hips were rated fair, but both parents are rated OFA Good, or would you move on?
I'm learning about the German Shepherd world, and wanted to get your opinions. Thanks everyone.

What's wrong with fair?

by BroncoK on 31 December 2011 - 22:12
I'm not sure :D. Is there something wrong with fair?
by Blitzen on 31 December 2011 - 22:12
Yes.

I would buy neither, only German with ZW= genetic ratings of ALL dogs in pedigree ,what they had and are producing, hence what your dog most likely will produce. I have seen it many times when people say " but the parents and grandparents had good OFA's " well ,the whole pedigree counts. Good luck

Oh, come ON, people.
You're saying that (assuming the 'fair' is the worst thing on the ped) with 2 parents who are 'good' that a 'fair' (which is a passable rating, and imo, many OFA 'fairs' would be a1 anyway...) on a grandsire would be a dealbreaker? For God's sake...this is what's wrong w/GSDs today. Let's breed sucky dogs with excellent hips rather than breed great dogs with good or fair hips. Puhleeze.
Please tell me I misunderstood something, because this kind of thinking infuriates me.

Bronco, what's the pedigree? PM me if you don't want to post it. I must be misunderstanding what's being discussed here. I can't believe that one "fair" on a pedigree is an issue. There must be something more.

Have the parents been tested for Degenerative Myelopathy, thyroid, heart, elbows, eyes, temperament?
Do any of the dogs in the pedigree have epilepsy?
History of bloat?
Missing teeth?
Missing testicles?
Megaesophagus?
Pancreatic enzyme deficiency?
Ears that don't stand erect?
Addison's disease?
Auto-immune diseases?
Allergies?
There is more to a dog than his hips........

Sure there's more to a dog than hips but the questions was about a grandsire's hip rating.
Not only that, but show me a top working breeder who is testing for *all* that stuff. To eliminate dogs w/out all those tests is not in the best interest of getting a working dog, imho. What you'll more than likely end up with is a pet bred dog from working lines way back from a breeder who has a ton of dogs and runs a zillion tests to camouflage the fact that they're a puppy mill and don't really know what the hell is going on with their own dogs.
I'm grossly generalizing and exaggerating of course, but the point is that yes, there is a LOT to a good dog, and it's not any one thing, it's the sum of all things, not the least of which is a good relationship/common viewpoints with the breeder.
