I have a friend who's stud dog is two years old, and she recently took him to a Canine Reproductive Specailist, and he told her that her stud has low sperm cell count, and possibly low motility level. So, for the past few months he has been on Vitamin E, which the specailist said **MIGHT** help to get those numbers up. Any ideas how to get the numbers up? He has plenty of libido, so thats not the problem. Any secret home remedies to help? Any help would be appreciated,
Krista

I would guess that the Repro Specialist would have the best answers, but I do know that in horses the studs need to breed.Literally. That the first ejaculate in young horses, and even in older horses at the beginning of the breeding year, literally need to breed mares to get viable sperm. Anyone know if the same applies to dogs?
I had a Fero son who's sperm count I was worried about and I talked to our local Repro. Vet and he said that the dog needed to be ejaculated about every 3 to 4 weeks. It worked for him.

I would look at the dogs diet and consider going natural (raw). She could add more zinc (be careful though on a commercial feed) selenium, folate and some specific herbs like ginger and ginko. Treating with herbs takes time and she wont see any fast results. She might want to consider having a TSH done to make sure the dog isnt hypothyroid. I have found that dogs that were difficult to breed always had other underlying problems that surfaced later on. Now I cull them from the breeding pool which many times is disheartning esp if I have spent alot of money and or time on the dog.
Good luck
Vickie...do you do that yourself?
Sorry all, turns out the male is 6 1/2 years old, don't know if that effects the answers you might have given, sorry!!!!
Males who do not have a regular breeding plan may need to be ejaculated periodically in order to protect their reproductive health. I don't say this to be Mr. Funny Guy, but if you do this absolutely do not let it be known. Several states have animal cruelty laws as well as bestiality laws that can cause you a lot of grief, so you may wish to have your veterinarian do this so that it is interpreted as a medical treatment.
Past this, the ligaments that support the testicles need to work properly; i.e. lower and raise to maintain the correct temperature which is slightly less than normal body temperature. If the dog is in a super-hot environment it can cause less than ideal sperm production.
The reproduction specialist should be certainly the person who can help this dog.

Thank you all so much, It made sense to me, after reading somewhere "To keep a male sperm in top count, a regular breeding practice is suggested." Thanks so much, I'll keep you guys updated as to what happens with my friend's stud dog,
