Just looking back at some old pedigrees and what not, and noticed somethings that confused me.

Horand, I see is SZ 1, which I know he was the first, yet I also see that his parents have SZ numbers too? Were they added later? And what is SVALT?

I hope someone can clear some of this up for me, I'd appreciate it!

As 1/2 owner of the WinSIS-X German Shepherd dog database, I am the most qualified person to answer this question.

In order to enter a dog in the WinSIS-X database, it must have a registration number.  In the old SV breed books, many of the unregistered dogs are listed, but there was no way to enter the information.  So WinSIS-X created a breedbook called SVALT and made up unique numbers for these unregistered dogs.

You will often find a dog listed as having an unregistered parent, but then in the book , that dog's parent was registered and we felt it was helpful to have as much information as possible.
For example
................V Hektor Linksrhein  (Horand Grafrath)    1   1/1/1895
........ Marko (von Remscheid)   SVALT 999616
................SG Mores vom Neckarursprung    704   1/15/1897
Wanda Gräfin von Berg    605   6/4/1903
................ Fix (von der Schönebeck)   SVALT 999615
........ Herta Gräfin von Berg    449   12/31/1901
................ Berta (von Ebersdorf)   SVALT 999614

Wanda's sire is an unregistered dog Marko (von Remscheid), but Marko's sire is the registered Hektor and his dam is the registered Mores.

Don't forget, until the early 1940's there were still unregistered shepherds who would then pass the tests and get a registration number.  In many cases, their parents would be unregistered.

We also liked to add these unregistered dogs because they identified the type of shepherd (Thüringer Gebrauchshund, Württemberger Gebrauchshund, Mitteldeutschen Herdengebrauchshund, Süddeutschen Herdengebrauchshund etc. of these early founding dogs.
