Something happened today that was unexpected and could have been a disaster, but wasn't. Sorry I can't make this long story short.
I bought a used dishwasher to replace the one that was dead. Took the old one out, got it to the trash and went to install the "new" one. The old was was hard wired 110 and the new one was 220, requiring a plug. I can do a lot of things, but I don't mess with electric. Anyway, I capped the wires with wire nuts, bent it back to the wall and laid a gate against the counter to keep Drake from sniffing back near the wires. I'm trading pet sitting for a 220 and am not sure when he's available, so...
Was letting Drake out the back door when his butt hit the metal gate and it fell, almost on him. He had nowhere to go, as I hadn't yet opened the screen door. He tucked his ass in and the most it could have gotten was the tip of his tail, but he didn't yelp, so I didn't think so. AND... it's a 26 inch, metal gate with a door that swings, AND doesn't close when not firmly secured. I didn't panic through the door and let him bolt out the back! I calmly put him in a sit, directly between the gate and the door. And he sat! I then calmly opened the door, reached out and got his long line off of the hook and let him out! THEN I praised him, played with him, petted him.
When we went back in. I put him in a sit, again between the now closed door and the gate. I calmly picked up the gate, carried it into the next room and released him! And he remained calm the whole time!
I learned a valuable lesson about my dog today and about myself :) Had I paniced, he would have paniced. We both remained calm and gained some respect for each other, in that we confirmed that we trust each other. One of the best days of my life with dogs :)
