Which breed to choose for Mondio and SAR - Page 1

I have 3 years experience in Schutzhund, titled my female to Sch1. My mother currently owns her as her PPD since becoming single and living on her own and I am wanting to get into Mondio with a club here in Dallas, TX. I also volunteer at the SAR group and want to become a handler doing that as well. I have a family and this dog would be indoors when we are home and outdoors when we are not until maturity.

I have always wanted a Mal but I hear they are less forgiving of handler errors, now being a novice handler am I ready for a Mal or will I just end up screwing him up if I make a mistake during training? I know my GSD led me a lot of times on what to do and even when I made a mistake she could correct herself is a Mal like this as well? I do need a dog with a lot of drive but I also need them to have a clear head and not bite first ask questions later.

I know theres some sweeping generalizatinos and stereotypes about both breeds and I am well familiar with them but personal unbiased opinions would definitely help in my decision. I am looking to find one by the end of the month, maybe within a week or two.

So that is basically what I have found here they all have pups available although I haven't been in contact yet with Mohawk kennels to discuss my wants and needs. What do you guys about which breed and also about those pups, I know my budget is around $1000 for a pup + me driving no more than 12 hours each way to pick them up from Texas so if these aren't good choices maybe you can direct me to something better.

A dog that is suitable for engaging in a bite sport AND SAR requires a particularly special balance of temperament and drives that would definitely be a "steal" if you could find it in a gsd for under a $1000.  I'd guess you'll find better luck with the mal breed, given your budget and search area.  But also, you should probably be looking at older pups or young adults, rather than puppies, to be sure of the temperament.

 Can't go wrong with Mohawkmalinois heard good things about him and his dogs are are in my older mals.great dogs.

I personally would not choose a mal to do both sport and sar with.

@ Daryl sorry i havent seen much difference between the 1000 puppy and the most expensive 1500 dollar puppy. I have seen mutts do schutzhund and shelter dogs do SAR I find it hard to believe I cannot find a GSD or mal to do both, I have seen plenty of SAR dogs titled in protection sports before. I am sure if I wanted to wait another 6 months I could find more dogs but those are the ones that are available to me within the next few months.

I think I am leaning toward a Mal anyways, new breed, new learning experience, different personalities should be fun.

I disagree if you think suitable prospects for both are plentiful, but good luck.  Few enough gsd's could do well in MR alone, IMO.  And few enough are worth their salt in SAR as well.

A lot of SAR organizations will not allow a protection trained dog to work with them.  Some do allow SchH I, some not at all. 

That is also true. I was unable to train schutzhund while I was in sar with my group.

I would take a look at the french kennels ,I just want to france to get a pup from french lines and dogs with ring litle, I dont agree that the gsd can not do the work,but wonder why many breeders dont do enough to breed the gsd to keep up being one of the lost versatile working dogs istead of only breeding and training schh titled dogs . ÆIf france is to away dont know where to look
