Hi everyone!

I am posting here in hopes that I may find some help in finding a breeder for my future puppy. It seems that there are not an awful lot of Malinois-related forums out there, and the ones I have found either seem to be not very active or geared more toward AKC obedience and conformation, rather than working dogs. (Of course, if anyone has a good suggestion for Malinois forums, I'm happy to hear them, too!)

Anyway, I have had and handled German Shepherds for years and am much more familiar with Shepherds than Malinois. My current dog is a Belgian Malinois and she is just about everything that I would want from a new puppy. She has an absolutely rock-solid temperament, fantastic drive, and is wonderfully healthy. She is now a senior but most people who meet her still think she's a puppy because she still has a ton of energy, especially for bitework and scent work. She's a fantastic dog. She has Elgos Du Chemin Des Plaines and Bronco Perle des Tourbiere in her pedigree.

I am not at all as up on Belgian Malinois breeders as I am on German Shepherd breeders, so I'm hoping those more experienced will be able to chime in. I have gotten some recommendations from K-9 handler friends of mine, particularly TriState K-9, and have followed up on those leads and am considered them, but a lot of them are brokers / importers of green dogs rather than breeders and I think I'd prefer to start a puppy this time around. (Most my previous dogs were adults.)

I am looking for someone who is producing excellent temperament, excellent health, and excellent drives. I would be looking to train the puppy for scent work and Ringsport. (Coming from Schutzhund, going to Ringsport will be a change but there is a Ringsport Club within 2 hours drive but the nearest Schutzhund club is 4+ hours away, not counting Canada.)

My current dog does a little of everything. She does work in Schutzhund, but she also works as a Therapy Dog (and is fantastic at it). We've competed in Police K-9 "Iron Dog" competitions and done well, placed each time. We've also gone and taught dog safety to little kids at school. So what I'm really looking for is a pup that can continue to do "everything" I throw at my dogs - and have that temperament that can go from visiting as a Therapy Dog to doing bitework. IMHO a good, stable dog should be able to do everything but I am not seeing that with a lot of dogs (German Shepherds as well as Mals).

So ... recommendations?

And, if at all possible ... on the East Coast. I do not mind traveling to pick up OR shipping a pup, but would prefer to drive and pick up. Anywhere in New England or anywhere New York / Ohio to North Carolina would be ideal.

I have some good pups available and more on the way. I would also check out queen City K9 in North Carolina. Ted, the owner is a good square guy and will treat you right. He has some real nice working pups on the ground right now also!
Feel free to give me a call.

When you mentioned East coast and Malinois, the first person that came to mind was Ivan Balabanov. He is located in Florida. He is a very stand up person and knows Malinois VERY well. I would contact him.

Hi everyone,

Thanks so much for the responses and suggestions.

Jyl, I will definitely look into Ivan Balabanov's dogs - although Florida is a bit far for me to go and pick up a puppy as I am in upstate New York on the Canadian border. I was hoping for someone not further south than North Carolina, really, so I can drive it rather than having the puppy shipped. (I'm not opposed to shipping but I'd definitely prefer to pick up, even though that may limit my options.) I'm familiar with Ivan (who isn't) and his accomplishments and his dogs are beautiful, so even though it's a little outside driving range will definitely consider him. I bet most his pups are long, long reserved before he ever breeds ... wonder how long his waiting list is?

Shepherdace - can you give me more information about Martha Hunt other than a phone number? How about a kennel name so I could do some research into her dogs before contacting her?

Brad - I'll check out Queen City K-9. What kind of pups do you currently have on the ground? Pedigree?

If you are looking for someone in the New England region, I would recommend to talk to Konnie Hein from CT (http://laforgemalinois.homestead.com/index.html). She specifically selects for good temperament and nerve, in addition to workability and drive as most of her dogs are dual trained in French Ring and SAR (FEMA). I also actively compete in FR and see Konnie's dogs and her kennel's offspring routinely at training. Real nice person to work with and honest about the evaluation of her dogs and pups.

Mohawks Malinois in Kentucky, www.mohawksmalinois.com
They have two litters just born.

I am in California.  After talking to John and watching some video, we had a 3 month old pup shipped here.  Love her!!  She came out of her crate ready to work.  She is 7 months old now, full of drive and will work non-stop if I let her.  However, she has an off switch - which is great.  She knows when it's time to work and time to kick back and relax with the family, extremely loving--but not needy.  I have started French Ring with her and she is learning quick.  Hope this helps and hope ya find what you are looking for.

One of my litters can be found here:
http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/belgian_malinois/breeding.result?fadir=1186968&modir=1053865
They are almost 7 weeks old and there are 5 females still available. They will be UKC registered. They go back on Turcados on dad's side.

The other litter can be found here:
http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/belgian_malinois/breeding.result?fadir=565701&modir=1052164
These pups are almost 2 weeks old and there are 8 males and 2 females still available. They are not registered but go back on Turcados on dad's side and back on Klemm on mom's side. They should be some real high powered nice dogs.
