I currently use:
Nupro Joint Support - http://www.nuprostore.com/nuprojointsup.htm
&
Salmon oil - http://www.evolutionsupply.com/salmon-oil-for-dogs.html
You can read about the benefits of each by the links provided. The Nupro joint Support becomes a beef gravy when you add water.
I mix both with their food daily.
I also use to use on my dogs when I showed them:
Body Builder - http://www.equiade.com/cart/products.htm
I found Body builder really work well to add muscle tone, increase activity which also builds more muscle, & gives slightly more confidence.
But I did not use this product on GSD's. Many Bulldog, Mastiff type breeds, plus Dob's, sight hounds use this product for their show dogs.
If you don't allow your dog to burn off the extra energy from this product you won't see results. Example if the dog is kept in kennel / crate.
It works best for more calmer dogs that don't build muscle from lack of exercise. This will give them the boost to get up & go they need for muscle tone.
That is why I don't use this product on my WL GSD's the would be climbing the walls if i did. LOL. If your do is already active try taking him swimming, running on a sandy beach,
& slow steady trot while you jog / bike ride. My people use treadmills also. I take my dogs for off leash hour+ hikes daily, plus swim daily when weather permits.
Training them often with long throws of the ball for rewards & protection training is a good work out also. My dogs get work 4x a week plus daily short training sessions.

I don't use suppliments, have considered it, ,but esp when we just came out of a horrible heat spell, mine get exercised a lot. I vary it, swimming, walking obedience, fetch, agility, trackig bitework etc just vary it so they are using different muscles each day.
