Wanted: german shepherd puppy - Page 1

Im begining out with the sport of schutzhund and looking for a male german shepherd puppy to learn with.  Do not want over the top drives as I am just beginning.  Any suggestions would be most appreciated.  Thank you.

 A lot of members can lead you locally to some prospects

Second:  WHICH drives are you worried about being over the top..IF you do not have high drives you are in for a difficult journey.

Besides a puppy is gonna hopefully be high food drive first of all..THIS one is very important and then the prey drive you won't know much now, but the play drive should be at top.

If you do not have all three you will back on here complaining  MY PUP WON"T

and the first of the book shows and describes how to test a puppy.. YOU NEED TO KNOW  before you trust someone else to show you...
You can be rooked very badly if you do not learn all the ins and outs before you purchase your puppy for sport and you need to read the book about training a SPORT puppy as you do not start a SPORT puppy the same way you do a household pet.

Are you ready for that kind of reaction and training ? IT IS different.

I am working with a schutz club and they suggested I look here, but be prepared. 

I will take your advice and do more research.  Im understand high drive and prey drive .....I just dont want a pup that will take the siding off my house:).

And I went back to see the link for the woman that wanted to "dispatch" her pups if she cant find them a home.  I didnt see it, but I looked quickly... its a shame breeders do this.  My dogs are not pets, they are family members that eat, sleep and live inside with all of us.  Heck... on most days, I love my dogs more than my kids!

Funny you said the thing about the siding my girl has so much drive that at 7 months old I took my older shephered on a walk to the mailbox and Fang was in the back yard, she started freaking out and amping up. The next thing I know the little bitch was slamming her body into the wooden fence we have then she started to bite it. 5 seconds later I hear this loud ripping and tearing sound and she tore the plank of the fence right off against the direction of the screws...5 seconds after that as I was running towards the fence she tore off the second one and got free.

I just don't see why someone wouldn't want something like that :) I love, love this little monster, especially when she leaps onto my counters or dinner table or jumps over my couch from behind over me and the people sitting on it for fun. There is of course the time she snapped her nylon collar....yeah these working line pups are a bit umm...intense especially for someone newer to the sport but I love everything about my dog and I have never been happier with an animal of mine in my life. Good luck and I hope you get everything you need and are looking for I am sure you and your new pup will do fantastic.

Ha, ha, ha!!!!  I remember too.  I have an Ellute daughter that has scored SG all three phases in SchH3 and when she was about a year old ate the aluminum siding in her kennel, about a square foot of it!!!  I could not believe it.  But it all came out in dime sized pieces.  She is lucky to be alive. She had over the top food drive as a pup and was very hard to keep.  But she is a spark of life and she is everything to me, and now a wonderful dog that is good with our old GSD and a pleasure to have around.  But the comment about siding set me laughing.

I am also new to schutzhund although it's my almost 4 yr old show line male who si starting out first with the obedience. My working line bitch has the necessary drives and even on a quiet day can be  abit of a live wire but she can'tparticipate as she has HD. Nightmare. I spend most of my time trying to work out how to keep her occupied without overdoing things so she end up in pain but also enough to keep her happy and contented.

Ha Ha, thought Ryder was the only crazy puppy to try and jump onto a counter.  He was so excited that he ran around the coffee table twice and then into the kitchen and jumped up in an attempt to make it onto the counter.  My husband and I just stood there frozen.  When he stopped we started cracking up.  He said, "Wow, it was like a train coming off the rails."  Puppy zoomies, gotta love it.
