What could be the possible advantage of having a stud dog with no line breeding. Even if I want to outcross I would want to outcross on to a different line.

Line breeding is at its best advantage when it is close up. Multiple scattered line breeding contributes more to linebreeding depression than to genetic prepotency. A dogs potency of production is not dependent solely upon linebreeding, but on many factors. With an open pedigree on one side you might plan for close up linebreeding (if appropriate) without the complications and depression associated with excessive linebreeding. Bear in mind an animal is not considered linebred unless their parents share one or more ancestors in the first 5 generations, even though one parent or both might have been heavily inbred. Linebreeding is far too often regarded as a thing of magic. More to the point is the big picture of genetics and production of specific animals and judicious use of linebreeding when appropriate.

Jdh, You have really got my curiosity up. The owner of the male dog has mated a bitch from a totally different line. Consequently the product which is the dog in question has no line breeding. I am just explaining the situation here. I agree with you that all depression of line breeding will not be present here. Therefore this dog can conviently stud any bitch of either his sire's or dam's line. This puppies thus born will be line bred on the sire or dam. But my question is how do I know what this dog will produce. Do I go by the sire or the dam- on the face of it it is 50-50 atleast theorotically unless I start looking at phenotype. Breeding is I thought all about fixing a type. How can I fix a type if I do not line breed. My larger question is when do we line breed and when do we move out? Please I am asking this out of my genuine interest. This
