What stands out about these dogs? Been looking at the pictures here in PD but haven't been able to catch on. A local breeder has dogs from this line, so curious to know what to expect from them.

The Pohranicni Straze has not existed since 1989. Jiri Novotny was the head of breeding, training, of these great dogs. At the end he got all the brood dogs that he wanted and started Jinopo kennels. The best source for info on the breeding of these dogs would be to contact Hans at Alpine K9, or Jiri Novotny at Jinopo. The Ps was not a line but a name meaning border patrol. They have 6 lines that they have established, and all have their own merit.

Could someone please post how to pronounce Pohranicini Straze phonetically? I've always wondered what was the correct way to say it.

Thanks,

Not all but many people falsy claim to have and produce  z Pohranicni straze dogs. However as far as I know, the only people who diligently and with proper knowledge, promte these "type of Old style Czech" working dogs of z Pohranicni straze is the creator of these dogs, Jiri Novotny and me. There are others who are folowing our example and cooperate with us. We work closely together and are helping to these  breeders to promote and produce these type of dogs.
This type of dogs is mainly characterized by square structure, 50:50 prey defense drive, rugged look, strong bone structure ( hips , elbows, spine) , longevity, and with that long serviceability and most importantly versatility.  These are working dogs. They are not narrowly bred dogs for any specific narrow purpose like specifically for sport, but  even so they can and do compete on national and international level in many sports like ZVV, SchH, IPO, PSA,....they are not bred lopsidedly just for super prey and neglecting the defense / courage based drives ( ability to deal with threat through inherited courage) as these days it is common and realy a rule in most sport dogs.
We at AlpineK9 and JINOPO believe that this type of breeding is what GSD was originally intended to be by Max v Stephanitz. Strong, healty, vigorous, versatile, working dog. ( Please take a note that i am making sharp distinction in "work" versus "sport" dogs.
There are many people in Families with children and S&R, Police and other LE, military, sport, and so on,... who enjoy these dogs.
Here I would try to dispense a notion that "z Pohranicni straze" or any other  old style type Czech dogs must have 100% Czech pedigree. This is a major mistake and to the breed  destructive notion.
These dogs all came originally from Germany and subsequently DDR. Thus it is important to understand that these dogs are not derivatives of the geography, but they are result of  the philosophy and culture of Czech peole. We are talking about TYPE(!!!) not georaphical region . Also keep in mind that not all Czech dogs are these dogs. In Czech rep. are  German lines  too and sport lines and show and so on. This old style Czech TYPE of the dogs is created based on the culture and philosophy of some Czech traditionalists and may and does incorporate dogs from other regions and countries as long as they are of specific type.

Hey Hans, so how does one cooperate towards preserving the working dog? Is there some sort of "Association Towards Preservation of Czech Working GSD"?

Never seen it quite put like that before, I really like it.
