RLHAR

by RLHAR on 28 July 2011 - 00:07

My little family and I (Hubby and 7 year old son) have taken to walking two miles around the block in our rural subdivision.  We take the two GSDs with us on our walk, always on leashes because while our area is pretty open rural, it's also a subdivision.

In the past year, one of the farm neighbors of the subdivision has drawn a hard line about loose dogs.  The dogs touch his property he shoots them, period.  To date 6 dogs have been shot with varying degrees of injury to death.  He is completely within his rights in this state and county per leash laws and livestock laws.  Loose dog so much as trots across a blade of his grass, he's clear to shoot them.

Needless to say most of us dog owners in the neighborhood have stepped up our game to ensure our dogs remain contained in our yards or are on leash at all times.

I say most.

Tonight as we're heading up the last leg of our walk a Golden Retriever/Chow mix, intact male about 10 months old comes cavorting up to us.  Needless to say neither of my dogs were thrilled about this development and when he tried to come on to my female (she's spayed and was annoyed) my male went about ape shit to the point where I had to string him up to keep him from tearing into this dog.   This dog, already had the shave markings of recent surgery all across the side of his head and across his throat and legs.

We keep walking, this GRCmix keeps following and jumping on both of my dogs until finally I put my male in a platz and grab this little furry spaz and physically pull him away.  Well, he has a tag to a house literally just 2 minutes up the road from where we were and so my husband calls the number to tell these people their dog is loose.

Their response? "Oh, we know.  He got away from our daughter and he likes to wander."

When my husband expressed concern about the recent surgery marks, their response was...

"Oh yeah, he got out and got ripped up by a Rottie recently..."

No s*** Sherlock.  If I wasn't strong/tall enough to string my 80lb male up he'd have gotten ripped up by a GSD!

We mention that we've got our hands on him and they're all "Okay, we'll be along..."

So the six of us stand there by the side of the road for 20 minutes waiting for what should be a 2 minute car drive.  Finally a teenager and her friend come driving up, call the dog into the car and go off without so much as a thank you or an apology.

I should have just let the poor little f***** go and let the farmer get him.

Call animal control and report them for allowing the dog to run at large. You're able to supply the date, time and location, since you captured the dog and held it until these brainless shits sent one of their brainless spawn after it...and your dogs were put in a dangerous situation because that dog was loose.  Had you not been able to prevent it, one of your dogs could have torn into the Golden mix, and from that point forward be labeled as an 'aggressive' dog.  I'd report them as quickly as I could dial the telephone.

Depending on where you live there is no animal control that has jurisdiction on something like a dog at loose.  We live in the county not city limits and you would have to call the sheriff's dept that typically have better things to do than worry about a dog running loose in the country.  Here too if the dog is on your property you can shoot it.  It may sound callous, but I am of the same mind as the old man.  I keep my dogs contained and or under control.  I would never dream of letting my dogs run all over gods creation.  I don't know how many times when we first moved in I had to go talk to someone because their dog was in our yard, to get the response well he's a nice dog.  If he's such a nice dog you think you would care what happened to him because not every other dog is nice.  So I have explained my dogs are very expensive, my dogs are current on all vaccinations etc, but if their dog gets in my yard and one of mine goes over the fence they will kill it.  I do Not want my dogs fighting with other dogs, even if they win who knows how beat up they could get and I don't know what your dog has or doesn't have.  So unfortunately I am like the old man now.  I will go to the owner once, if it continues to show up it gets shot.

....RLHAR....interesting story...you have a lot more patience than I do...i would have drove the dog to Humane Society and owners would have had to pay $80.00 to get him out.....

I had a small run in yesterday morning in my neighborhood...I heard stories of a dog living at the end of the culde sak where I temporarily rent but never had an issues because i hate going for a walks when every tom, dick and harry goes for a walk...so my preferred time is from 4:45 am - 5:45 am

Yesterday I was entering the culdesak area when i saw 2 black dogs running towards us, 1 large dog, slightly shorter than my GSD but very wide back looked like a smaller version of a Rotti and one ankle biter - looked like mini dobi pincher...neither barked but went straight for my dogs who i pulled back and attempted to kick the big dog, if i could have got it right dog would have been airborne, however my dogs (Bailey 15 month old GSD post surgery, and Ridgeback ) were moving around me, while other dogs were circling, i did not wanted to have a fight because Bailey does not warn she just lunges and bites at unknown dogs, and this was not helping her dog issues, so I stayed between dogs blocking loose dogs from passing me..few seconds later after i tipped the dog on a side with my foot he/she finally got the hint and ran back towards end of the culdesack about 15-20 feet from us and precede to bark, so did the pincher...i mean it was a non stop bark, if one pauses for a second the other gets louder...i knew if i turned around and started walking i would have been followed and Bailey would have been looking back, and it would have just made it worse for her with strange dogs....Anyways so here i am in the middle of the street...i told my dogs to sit which they did and I just stood there..seemed like forever...but maybe 5-6 min at most..it was 4:51 am...(i checked my phone) and I thought..screw it...its someone dogs let 'e,m f*** bark! so as they are barking i hear someone in the house on the right scream..."Shut up!"...a min later far house on the left turns lights on and few seconds later garage door opens up and loose dogs run into the garage....so i turn around and walk home...thinking..."yeah, leave your dogs out again, I will be back tomorrow at 4:30am...and I will bring a pepper spray..." ;)

so you are absolutley right...dogs suffer due to human stupidity....

<SIGH> I am sick of spending more time worrying about, and crying over, other people's dogs when they cannot or will not take proper care of their animals.  Haunted if I don't call animal control and they get hit by a car and haunted when I do wondering if they will be put down.  Sick of thinking that I am going to have to take actions against the pit bull up the steet that charges my four German Shepherds and is always loose no matter how many citations animal control has issued.  I should not have to be prepared to spray or kill someone else's dogs to defend mine.  They cannot bother caring for their own so I damn sure know they won't pay my vet bill.  I am sure if my dog's kill theirs they will be the first to complain however!

MAN i was soooooooooo angry the other day my dogs KNOW their yard boundarys and never leave it inless i call them off of it both where at a down say in the yard whall im doing work out there they dont care with epople walking by with their dogs kids what ever they where enjoying the sunlight these people show up in a RV diesel thing loud as heck park it like 10 feet from the stop sign on the road right across the street from my house and let their dogs out to piss on peoples yards and where sitting out there drinking a beer in my neighbors yard who wasent even home. i was just soo shocked and then both their dogs see me and come chargeing across the road barking their heads off well of coarse my shepherds will have nothing to do with it so they run up to the yard line and just flag their tails no barking i called them back and put them on a down stay and the dumb dogs from the rv come back again this time they meet face to face atleast mine are ok with other dogs inless they start crap. so now my feathers are all ruffled i walk over there and yell at the people they jump up w/o saying anything and jump in their rv and leave. who the heck decides to stop and picnic on a strangers lawn. i live in the city i mean honestly and we have leash laws here when im off my property mine always have their leash on and i pick up their potty in peoples yards or on the concrete if it so happens to be that way but i dont let my dogs go into others lawns yet all the time people will walk their dogs and let them romp in my front grass. last year some lady was walking a pit and she saw i had a sprinkler on she brings the dog to my yard unhooks the leash and tells him to play in my sprinkler whall we where all sitting on our deck...... well my dogs go crazy in their kennels and her pit runs up and slams into my kennels and starts fence fighting with my male. that one i did call the police on as her dog went into my empty open kennel i shut the door and called animal control come to find out the dog wasent suppos to be in public as it had just bit someone like 2 days before and was due for being put down. i have nothing against any breeds but people CONTROL YOUR DOGS..... ok my rant is overwith

I understand the fustration you guys are expressioning over loose dogs, especially with Siantha. It is really amazing how many people could care less about going onto your property to enjoy for themselves.

I live in a semi rual area that has leash laws. We have a lot of farmers that will shot a loose dog to protect their livestock. My biggest issue we have sinced we moved into our home is other people treating our property like a public park.
At the end of our property is a deep river & 3000 acres of land perserve + water company property. Almost every week we get strangers that walk through my yard to go fishing / swimming in the river, or take their dogs swimming.
We have people walking their dogs on leash then unhooking the leash for them to go play in our yard & walking to the land in back. We've even had people setting up camp sites in the back of our yard.
All these people have to walk by my dogs in their kennels to get to the end of the yard, but they just don't seem to care. I even had someone fishing in the river put their dog in a empty kennel of mine because his dog was scaring the fish away. We had some our chickens killed by these people's dogs running through our yard. It was sad because our dogs were trained to never leave our property, but we had to fence in our property just to keep out all the people with their dogs. But I could never imagine letting my dogs loose into someone else yard to relieve themselves. Of course they never cleaned up after their dog either.

I couldn't get myself to shoot another animal so instead tried working it with the dog's owners or called the police for trespassing onto our property. Our town is small enough the cops knows us well, so they are always willing to help us out.
But it still amazes me the amount of free running dogs & people walking onto our property.

I carry a cattle prod with a 22 inche extension.

It sends loose dogs packing and does not physically harm them.

There is little to no animal control where I live as well.  If yiou catch a lioose dog they ask if YOU will keep it while they try to locate the owner (huh??).

Yes.. the dogs pay for human stupidity.  They always do.  IMO if a dog has to bePTS due to stupid owner disease the least we could do for humanity and dogs would be to spay or neuter the owner so they will not pass their stupidity on by means of the gene pool.....

.. but what do I know.
