Hi
I am not a mal owner i am a gsd owner i am not getting a mal either. I just wanted to type this to other mal owners cause it has been disturbing/upsetting me. A while ago few months i fell int the wrong hands of a brutal personal protection trainer who didnt use any prey foundation training on his dogs and used compulsion training only seemed pretty abusive to me after our first session me and my family quit after being advised by other trainers including police officers and some of the best trainers in the world.
One thing that i didnt understand is the person said the MAL is his breed of choice and he imports them from holland and said i should get one?
why this makes no sense is doesnt a mal have higher prey drive then gsd and shouldnt it be worked in more prey ?Or they both equally are breeds that need good prey foundation etc..I could be wrong but wouldnt working a mal in only defense with no prey foundation be sick and cruel? He told me his mal was a killing machine even though i never met his mal and never even seen a video of it. I assume he abused the living crap out of it. HE tried to convince me and my family to leave our dog with him for 3 weeks so he could turn our dog just like his mal in his words "a machine"
IF i am wrong about the breed sorry and disregard this post.

The trainer you spoke of may very well be an idiot and possibly cruel to dogs. However, working a dog in defense does not equal cruelty or abuse. Mals have defense too and it is no problem at all working them in defense if they are stable to begin with.

Working any dog in only defense is like never using reverse on your car

I dont know the trainer you speak of, however, ALL dogs trained for REAL life applications must be trained in defense as well as prey in order to be effective in their work.
Yes, most sports are sadly only focused in prey drive because they are point driven sports and no one really expects a Sch dog to work in real protection. Defense training stresses the dog into understanding that the "helper" can indeed hurt him and its not a friend, but, like all things, it must be given in measured doses to be effective.
As far as your comment about GSD's being more serious then Malinois in their protection work, I would say that all depends on lines and what country they came out of as well. NVBK lined dogs are much more serious then French Ring dogs, different requirements for different applications.
