Hi, has anyone ever had a 2 week old puppy with a abcess / infection from the umbilical cord biten off to close. If so how did the puppy recover?
I have a puppy who has been getting antibiotic treatments, plus I've been rising the area 4x daily. He is doing much better now at 3 weeks old.
But I'm concern over the efects such strong RX's will do to his developing liver, kidney, & intesines long term.
If anyone else had this before or a sit puppy on antibiotics could you tell me if their puppy had any long term effect?
Thanks

I have worked with midwives and veterinarians in Germany. We always used "Wecesin" Powder by Weleda for any issues with the umbilical and had excellent results.
It dries up the infection in a few days.
I always have it at home as it can be used for any wet wound or superficial infection.
Here is info about Weleda baby care: http://www.weledababy.net/international/index.php?id=707
I found one link for online orders:

Thanks so much TrigiesandTails. I'm going to order it today. I hope it helps.
Poor little guy, he was almosted healed but the mom won't stop licking + biting at the area even after a week. Never seen this before or had this happen in the past.
Most mother's after birth & the umbilical cord falls off they leave the area alone, but this girl won't on her pup's.
Once again thank you, it means so much if I can help the puppy.

I would suggest a minimal dressing /band aid on the stump after you put the powder on, so mom can't lick it off. If she takes that off too, just watch this pup closely for a while for the powder to react/settle into area that is infected.

also.. if you are giving antibiotics to the pup..make sure to give him a bit of yougurt daily.. and continue with the yougurt for a week after the antibiotics are finished..

nooo...you don't want to give yogurt to a pup that is being nursed! Mom's milk will provide for healthy intestinal flora!
