Thank you

Mufasa (I love that name) is a very cool K9 Pirate and living up to his name. He is a lot of fun to work with.

Kim,
I love your videos......laugh.

I noticed that you have him tied with a bungee type line.
I asked the trainer at the SchH club this weekend if I should use this type of line for drive building (Rag/Flirt work) and he said no.
I would appreciate your view on using this type of line. Also, using a flat collar vs. a harness.

Thanks,

C

Thank you for your comments and observations, your Schutzhund Trainer is correct about not using a bungee with pups.

Having said that, the pup in the video was on a tie out with a very short bungee extension because the tie out was wrapped around a large tree, more of a short shock absorber/extension.

We use a flat collar with our pups/dogs in order to control their targeting.

We would only use a harness on a weaker pup/dog in order to build up confidence, a harness allows for more movement (pivot point) as opposed to a flat collar, Or;

If we are training a client dog that requires; confidence building, has poor cardio (out of shape) or has damage to the larynx from someone's previous and overzealous training then we will use a harness for its bite training.

We never use bungee cords until the dogs are around seven to eight (7-8) months old, due to the stress it causes on the joints (depends on the individual dog’s strengths or weaknesses). And, when we do start bungee work it is done slowly to allow the dog to build up to it.

Anyone not familiar with Bungee work the should seek the advice of a professional trainer, watching videos, any videos on training only helps to illustrate the technique.

Pups = tie out, older dogs= bungee provided that you know how to properly use it and the dog is in good physical condition.

Bungee work, if done properly is essential in developing the bite and teaching the explosive entry on the fight.

This is just what works for us and our dogs.

Hope I answered your questions clearly

Thank you, I am still working on being a good Handler though, Tony Nikl is the Man. I am fortunate enough to be able to learn from him and have fun playing with the K9 Pirates at the same time.

As Tony is fond of saying "It is always about the Dog"

and, Tony Nikl is the trainer in the video, I try and avoid being on video.

It's good to see a pup that's so happy to work! Love that little wagging tail! And his name for that matter!

Mufassaaaaa.....
