Hi,

I'm new to the forum.  I would like to replace my past away GSD.
I live in Canada.    I have experience with german shepherd but in my area the breedders use mostly German Show line (Black & tan Black and red color).  I love them but I would like something different.

The  dog is really to be use in a familly home context.  I have a  3 year old dauther and another one is coming in a month.
So basically no shutzund , no breeding and no competion.  I just want a familly dog that will become another familly member and will protect us.

What I really like is the black & sable color look(see picture).  This color is really more rare in my area.  To be honest I've never seen one in my life.  But I find them so beautiful. With the researh I did this color seems to be a lot more use with the German Working line.  Sometimes people use DDR or CZECH term I think.

I found a breeder : http://www.alpinek9.com/index.html
Honestly on the web site everything looks  great. The guys seems to have a lot of knowledge.  However it's too far away so I will not be able to visit  the kennel. Air plane shipping will be the only option.

So I would like to have some opinion on that kennels and his owner Hans.  I want to be sure before sending  a good amount of money to somewhere whitout any visit so it's why I would like an external opinion.  On the site they talk about  1800$ for a pupies+ shipping.  Is it a fair price?
Honestly I think it's not that bad.   For the puppie I would like to stay before shipping between 1000-2000$ US.  Is it realistic for what I want?

Any other suggestion of kennels are welcome too.  I don't mind importing from Germany or  CZECH as long as the kennels has a great reputation.

Thanks for all your help and advice.

AlpineK9 = very good working line dogs, Hans is a very nice person, knowlegable and reliable. Best is you explain to him your need and he will advise whether he has a right puppy for you in his breeding program or not, moreover he likes to help and offers useful advice, talking to him you gain, you don't loose. Good luck.

Ibrahim

P.s: I don't think it is correct to call AlpineK9 as Black Sable GSD kennel as most if not all good breeders focus on quality of dog rather than the color. I agree though that dark sable is a beautiful GSD color, I have one myself.

I'm sure Hans can help you find the right GSD for your family.

I have a puppy from Hans he is very nice but I would say slightly above average. Nothing special, just a nice dog. Worth 2,000 with the shipping?..........Probably not at this point. Hans is a good guy to deal with and has a good reputation.

The dog pictured is my dog V-Bandit v Wolfsheim, he is not at Alpine K9 but is here in PA at Eichenluft Working German Shepherds.  I also took that picture, so would  you please remove it as it is not in context to my own program, dog or kennel and it is in violation of copyright.

Storm,
Welcome to the boardlaugh.

The black sable color is truly a beautiful color but........color is not the focus with the truly knowledgeable and reputable breeder.

The really good breeder raises dogs that are healthy (are without genetic defects), have great temperaments, and will stand behind the puppies they sell.

I do not have any personal experience with Hans at Alpine K9 but have heard many good things about his dogs and himself. I agree with Ibrahim talk to Hans and explain your needs.

You might give the general where are you are located in Canada. There are many good breeders along the upper US boarder states.

Good Luck in your search.

I think the issue with the picture is that the user uploading the picture to this site without permission.  It's one thing to hotlink or provide a link to Molly's site but another to save a picture and upload it somewhere else without permission.  Seems inconsequential but as someone who is a dog photographer it gets really old, really fast.  When I do events/shows I give owners photos of their dog for free, all they have to do is ASK.
