At what age do you stop puppy food and switch to adult?.

by LadyFrost on 01 June 2011 - 13:06
I think it would depends on dogs weight...i had switched mine to adult food at 6 months, but after a few months she was coming in underweight so i switched her back to high protein puppy food and she stayed on it for another 2 months once she was within the her weight range she was back to adult food.

Bob,
I don't know what food you are feeding.....BUT....if you want to consider an ALS food, I would suggest Earthborn Holistic Primitive. (Grain Free).
I'm not pro or con grain free foods.....I simply use foods that the dogs do great on.
Earthborn can be used for the dog's entire life.....puppy thru adult.
It has very good protein & fat levels, and the calcium level is acceptable for puppies...
It comes in 3 different varieties.
The best place to order this food (very reasonable priced) & delivered for $4.95 flat rate shipping is: www.doggiefood.com

I always did between 7 and 9 months depending upon the pup's needs. This seemed to work best for my dogs and I always used Flint River Ranch with great success.

I've been feeding TOTW (rotate recipes every 3-4 mos) for nearly 2 yrs., regardless of the life stage of the dog. I couldn't be happier with it. I buy it at my local feed store because its convenient to this house and cheaper there, but the fact that its available at Tractor Supply stores is a bonus when traveling. I had no trouble finding it anywhere I've been.
My dogs' poop on this stuff is suitable for framing. LOL

Hi Bob,
I fed Innova for a short period.....I have no negative thoughts on the food.
I "personally" decided, that I wanted to make my life a little easier.
We occasionally have litters...and I was getting frustrated buying different "stages" of food and products. I liked one product for small puppies, one for adults and one for seniors or retired dogs.
I just decided to find a great food for "most" of my dogs.....hence, Earthborn Primitive.
Now I just buy Earthborn Primitive and Cosco Premium Chicken/Rice. (Cosco for the older and retired dogs).....they all are doing great on both foods.
Best wishes!

I also feed TOTW high plains formula( it,s in a yellow bag and has wolfs on it) and my adults do just fine on it.

I only have the one, senior GSD now, and I know he doesn't need very high protein long-term, so I rotate him between the lamb and the salmon formulas, but when I had the younger dogs and pups I'd rotate through all the recipes, and will again when I have more dogs. I used to think the chihuahua would need high protein, had her on Evo for awhile, when she was little, but she actually does great on what T eats... :-(
