These Hips were taken at 36 months. The dog is very active and jumps as high as the
6ft high kennel when he is put out (I have tried to stop him but forget it).
What do ya'll think?

I would say Fair as well. I will say from what I see, the Vet did a GREAT job positioning your GS. Good luck with your results.

Looks good to me.

Ok.. here's the results. This was a test for all of you <grin>
This dog has been "tagged" with OFA Moderate Hips each time he was xrayed. This was his 3rd set of xrays hoping that when he matured (he's from DDR lineage) they would like the bone better but they didn't. I have since sent the films to SV to see how they grade them. I agree they are not perfect, nor Good but I would consider them Fair and certainly workable.
I will let ya'll know how SV likes them.
P.S. This dog is already OFA Elbow, Heart, Thyroid Normal and CERF Good as well as AKC Rally Obedience titled (we paused when he didn't pass OFA Hips)

I don't see moderate. I can see Fair. I'll bet he goes a-normal.

Yep, I see fair; but still very workable. No matter what they say. Obviously these are working hips. That's really all you care about; in the past I have had OFA GOOD/good HIPS that as the dog aged became very arthritic and lame as an older dog so what the hell. For breeding; well you would have to consider ONLY the most perfect bitches with an excellent hips track record. A little hard to find but they are out there. Please let us know what SV decision is. I am very interested and was this dog put under at any time for any of his x-rays? I mean were any of the x-rays done under anastetic (SP??)? Or just done awake? I am also interested in this? Best of luck Nan
I also had one large male that was a jumper, jumped as high as his 6 ft kennel, up down,up down, up down, all day long, well he came back fair (definitely a no brainer but he produced good's and fair's and a little worse) so go figure.... Also had a pretty good hip background in his past so??? It's a crap shoot which I do not like. By the way a great working male and a beautiful moving dog. BOL

Nan,
He was sedated with Domitor each time. Domitor is wonderful as you can reverse it as soon as you are done and they walk right out. We don't use Gas Anestesia. I work at my Vet so I can position my own dogs for xrays.
As for SV, I sent them the exact same film so the result will be interesting (and hopefully better!).
And I too have had dogs go OFA Borderline as pups that go Good later (at 2). I have had pups go Good then at 2 they are Fair. This is why with this guy looking so close, I tried one last time after he was mature at 3. My first GSD was Fair at 2 years and when taken to the Orthopedic Vet at 12 (for a Back Issue), she said how nice it was to see a GSD with such awesome Hips. I had spayed this dog at 2 because I didn't believe in breeding Fair at that time. She felt they would be considered Good if sent in at that time which then she started her rage on OFA and their poor skills. OFA FAIR states they expect a bone change to happen as the dog mature's and this didn't happen. What a blow it was, she was a NICE little girl who ended up achieving over 20 titles in various different venture's. Was a bummer....

Thanks for the tip regarding domitor sedative; have you ever done your boy without anything? Just curious??? also will be interesting to see what SV has to say. I surely have seen a LOT of their dogs with A-3's being bred and shipped over here; which is an equivalent to our OFA Fair. I surely do not see moderate in his x-rays though.
MY very, very favorite vet that did my x-rays for 30 years told me if everything else is perfect on a mild/fair dog then he could be used without feeling quilty if the offspring can be monitored and of course prelim'ed, etc. Never did it but was temped a couple of times. Always placed anything that was not at least fair. and preferred a good/good and even with that got some dysplasia. Go figure. Best of luck Nan
