Just a quick question to you color experts out there...Do black and tan gsd's "ever" have pencil marks on their toes.  I have a litter of pups, sire is definitely bi-color, sire of dam was bicolor.  Two of the pups have very definite pencil marks on the toes, one much more defined than the other.  Some tan coloration on the checks, none behind the ears that I can tell.  Just curious if this penciling-at an older age, is ever seen in the b/t dogs or if it is specific to the bicolors and the sables that carry a gene for bicolor/black.  Thanks for info in advance!!!

Both my sables have pencil marks and tar heels.  Also my mentor has 2 sables with dark pencil marks and tar heels.

It's my understanding that the sables that carry the penciling and tar heels also carry the black recessive.

MOST sables that have black penciled toes and tar heels carry EITHER black OR bicolor recessive.  But as was pointed out to me, there are a few sables who don't carry either, who are simply rich pigmented and carry penciling/tarheels as well.  With sables, the recessive color gene must be known either by the parentage, or by what the dog produces.

Black/tans who retain penciling and tarheels are bicolors.  Puppies that are black/tan will be born with penciling/tarheels but they will fade away.  Bicolors retain their markings, and some get darker as they age.

Thanks Molly for adding most--I meant to and when I came back it was too late to edit it...................

My melanistic B & T saddle (showline) has black penciling between his toes. The tarheels have faded quite a bit with lesser amounts of the black hair replaced by tan.
