People that have done French Ring Sport with thier GSD what age did you start your puppy. Am a bit concerned about starting the agility part before two years old because of the wear tear on hips. I am new to French Ring Sport so any info would be great

A good friend and excellent trainer does not "jump" the jumps until dogs are 1 year old - all breeds. Using "touch pads" / targets get the dog going between the posts of the jump or with bar on the ground or even one very low bar to teach the mechanics involved in jumping with out the jumping.... Go over - stop - sit - come back - heel
You can see what I'm talking about in this video at the 30 second mark (this is mondio but the foundation work for the jumps at this stage are the same) Where are you located and who are you training with?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DdiGTPbYsHM&feature=player_embedded
sorry haven't figured out how to embed video here
BTW - I'm just the owner and breeder of the pup my friend did all of her training from 8 weeks to about 5 months -

dawgesome, that is a great video beautiful puppy can not wait to start on the ground work it sounds like the trainer I am going to work with has the same idea as yourself. She says we will start with obedience and some bite work. She also said since I am new it would be great for me to come out and see whats involved. New to French Ring Sport and working line GSD but excited to start. I will be getting my puppy middle of June. I live in British Columbia,Canada

I found German shepherd dog (admin)'s "how to post a video" post very helpful. Thank-you for providing this.

Thank You!
I have figured out inserting links & photos so now I guess its time to learn how to post video...
Good luck Minicus, its a fun sport.
Here is a video of one of our males (trained by me & sig. other) going over a non-regulation palisade
(then some dinking around with "searching")

MINI -- i start everything in fench ring with my puppy from puppyhood - erything . that is in puppy fashion .. for exanple , the food refusal exercise .. i teach that young ... and i have fun .. once the pup learns , for example i will drop food around my house , around the yard .. always gettting ther dog used to the gist , ' you don't take food'. , this way when a trial comes . no big deal ... last year i got a Yukon Bastillie GSD from germany , at 11 weeks old she was already conditioned to sit , down , stand and ... all out of my sight !! that is exceptional and i do not have those expectations for others . i start a pup , rag work , going through an auto tire , runnning through a very light water sprinkler , onto a metal garbage can ,through tunnels , on stairs[ the first step of course] . , make it walk over a tree limb for a bite .. a plastic milk carton thrown with rocks inside [ not at the pup of course] , generalize the materials the pup bites on that way fabrics are never an issue. start stick conditioning .. all at 8 , 10 . 12 weeks of age. get it used to walking in a basket for later 'guard the object' .. this kis good for somehting different and the pup never gets bored with the same old routine !! he caution for you : if you are hew ... work with some people that do Ring ... good luck -AP

Alphapup, thanks for the info. I will be training with a Lady whom has competed in French Ring Sport with Malli's. She has invited me to train with her as she is just starting one pup and has an older one she has competed with.

Question for dawgesome and alphapup if you do not mind, why did you choose french ring sport as there does not seem many GSD owners get into french ring sport.

LOL - actually I prefer SchH..... But I'm married to a Mondio Ring decoy - We participate in both sports, he has a ScH dog and does that kind of helper work for me too. I guess we really just like working dogs.... We were in to PSA for a while but it seemed to be just a little bit too "out there" and the membership has gone extinct in our area but Ring is growing in popularity here and I'll always love SchH (tracking is my favorite)
