I have a question, while training my 2 year old male, I told him to down, and he didnt, so I told him again, and pointed to the ground. When I did this he came snapping at me. Any opinions.

Before you start to comment...my dog is trained in a positive way, when we work he is normally happy go lucky, willing to please. I asked a person who I believed to have "experience", and his comment was that I need to get rid of the dog because I am dumb and the dog was acting in the "fight or flight"...last time I checked, telling your 2 year old dog to down was not that big of a threat.

What u mean by snapping? snapping teeth in the air or snapping growling?

by moose88 on 20 April 2011 - 16:04

snapping growling...coming forward towards my face. He has never done this before.

I hate to laugh because it's a potentially dangerous situation, but I have to laugh.  Look at it this way, you spoiled your teenaged son and now he's becoming a delinquent and has no respect for you or the games of children.

Were you standing over the dog when you did this?  What did you do when the dog did this, what was your response?

I would say it's time to take control of that dog.  The signs have been there and you just haven't picked up on them, unless the dog has a medical issue this doesn't happen over night.  I would recommend seeking out a professional trainer.  Positive training is great and I do it all the time, however, there are times when corrections are needed.  You need to get a handle on this dog immediately or you are definitely going to get bit.

I think the problem is your clicker is too small,,,,

Moose, didn't you come on here with a question about your dog and dominance a while back? Just curious.

by brynjulf on 20 April 2011 - 17:04

If you asked someone with experience  what there opinion was, why did you feel that their honest response to your question wasn't valid?  I highly doubt you are too "dumb" as you put it to have a GSD.  You do need prefessional help.  We can not give that to you on a forum as none of us has seen you with your dog.

sorry guys, seems as my whole message didnt come out....when he did this, I corrected him, and at first he challenged me, but then left it be. I am not a pushover, nor will I ever let a dog rule me. And for those who think I will let him boss me, or that I will just give him up....I dont need your comments.

Duderino. I have not owned this dog his whole life, I got him 6 months ago....however his attitude worked on the man before me.

slamdunc. I was standing on the side of him

Ladyfrost, he was put in his place

duderino...way to go on assuming i train with a clicker, cause i dont...

chaz, i may have though im guessing the post you speak of was a good while back, of an out of control male i had who had to be put down because of a brain tumor.

brynjulf. lets just say after digging up research on this "experienced" person...apparently he isnt looked at the same way by others. when i told him that i corrected the dog, he said i should have never.
