Just wondering if there are any suggestions about my dog. She is at the vet about to get a csection on day 58. She became very lethargic yesterday and wouldn't eat. Her belly is HUGE. The vet ran test and found no fever, normal white count, etc. She will sit up but can't left her weight and walk without assistsance. Vet thinks that the best is to get pups out. Any comments or ideas, no bad posts please I am a nervous wreckas it is!

How many litters has she had? Some dogs don't eat right before they're about to have the pups. Mine do, but some/most don't. Could be she's just plain uncomfortable and about to give birth. What's the reason for rushing for a c-section??? The vet must've seen something concerning unless he/she's just scalpel-happy.

No, it is obvious something wasn't right. Only 4 litters, first litter in 3 years
Got the puppies at home-10 babies. She has to stay. Her uterus was gonna rupture and she had to be spayed. He said it just came to pieces b/ it was stretched so far.

Look up fading puppies- there is a Labrador site with great info on doing this- much better than tubing them. I had a friend save a whole orphaned litter following this protocol. I'll try to find it and post back.

Yep; goats milk with clostrum if you can get it; every 2 hours; use a doll baby bottle or a premi human baby bottle; you can resize the nipple as needed. Put them on heating pad and if you can find a surogate mother dog that will take them on that could be of help to you. Will give you a break, otherwise you need help from friends, have them take shifts for you so you can get some rest. You will not be as stressed with rest& help. Weight the puppies daily until they are steadily gaining 2 or more ounces per day. Just keep rotating them and feed every 2 hours until they start gaining steadily then you can stretch it to 2-4 hours. Best of luck I have had an orphaned litter before and it is a lot of work, of course well worth it. I have never tube fed so I can't be of help to you there.

Shouldn't mom be home in a couple days?

My dog was home the night of her spay.... granted, it was a normal spay, not a ruptured uterus. Will she still be able to nurse the pups when she gets home?
If you were anywhere near Nebraska, I'd be happy to help you out with feeding the pups! Please keep us updated on mama and babies.... and good luck!

We had the same scenerio happen before, and mom came home with pups the same day. Since your girl didn't have any complications set in, got to wonder why she wasn't able to go home also. But we must have trust and faith in our vets, in that their decision is the correct one. After all, its their knowledge that we go to them in the first place. Good luck with the new babies and mom. Please keep us posted.
