Rocky, my 9 year old GSD, is starting to lose a lot of muscle tone in his butt/hip area. He eats a quality kibble that's about 25% protein, no byprodoucts or corn or wheat or soy, etc. We do offleash hiking 2 or 3 days per week (the distance I walk is 3 or 4 miles but he's sprinting back and forth like a dog half his age) and we play fetch a couple of times every day. Other than this loss of muscle tone he's in excellent shape and excellent health for his age. I'm wondering if it could be an indicator of any future problems with his hips? He's never taken a lame step. Also, if it is just muscle tone is there any way to get it back besides what we're doing? I wish we had access to a pool because he loves to swim, but we don't. I'm hoping you can see what I'm talking about in this photo.

My older female has muscle wasting in her hind legs due to arthritic changes in the spine showing bridging spondylosis. It is unfortunately not an uncommon thing.
Have you had his back xrayed?
