Does he actually have any idea what he is talking about? COULD he have ever cracked a book on dog theory?
Second, if the dog has no ball drive, you are barking up the wrong tree. Find something that dog is talented at.

for any type of working dog weather detection or protection the dog should be high drive a low drive dog has no motivation to want to do any of it.
also pseudo scent is ok but it is still not the real thing and your dog may not want to tell the difference one of my dogs was trained on real and my friends on pseudo hers didnt pass the test mine did. i dont know if it was dog working ability or handler or that the dog didnt recognise the scent.
mainly its handler choice and preference but i believe most will say real is better.

Real is always better. They go by scent. SCENT. meaning they are able to smell it and tell what it is. They are also very sensitive to the scent. So if your dog is really keen and he is taught with the real thing you will always get a 'positive" when he smells the real thing. If he is taught with pseudo...and depending how its made...that is the scent he will be looking for. Some dogs make the cross over. But if you are using a dog with high drive and good scenting drive...he really needs to know what it is he is looking for. And you can't fault him if he dosn't respond to the imposter which ever the case may be. He is most likely going to indicate what he was taught with. Hey I have an idea...use oregano to teach him with. Then take him out in the field to look for pot...........That was kind of a huge jump...but you get the point. It is the scent...and the dog can tell the difference...subtle as it may be. JMO
