I have a female GSd that is about 16 months. She is on TOTW and doing great. She is outside during the day with the other dog and then comes in around 5:00PM and spends the evening with the family . She sleeps in the house. I do bathe her about 1 time a month and am wondering if 2 times would be ok. If I do this what are your suggestions for a good mild dog shampoo. I don't want to dry out her coat or skin. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

With regular brushing you should not have to bathe a gsd with healthy skin and coat more than just before shows and once a year or so. Dirt should pretty well brush out with the right grooming and tends to not stay on their coats. When I take mine out and its mucky out I put them in the mud room till they dry and brush it right out.

I agree, even bathing once a month I would consider too much. My GSD has not had a bath to date, Dirt will just brush out. If really muddy, he gets hosed down a bit, or we go to the lake for a swim.

I can count on one hand the amount of time a year I bathe my dogs. Brush her regularly and you will be surprised how clean she stays.

What type of brush do you all use?

by GSDNewbie on 06 February 2011 - 21:02
I use a slicker brush that the bristles pull into the brush for first go over gets out the loose hairs and straigtens out the undercoat without stripping out the dog or hurting them like rakes tend to do. I then take a stiff "dandy" over them that is most commonly used on horses. After that a soft natural bristle brush. That is for a full grooming. Every moring brushing I after their morning exersize I just use the slicker real quick go over to take away loose hairs so reduce shedding in the home during the day.

My concern is more with odor. She looks great!

Many times odor goes back to food, what do you feed?
