Do you really want to start that discussion again?  And you are basing your opinion on what?  Do you know why the sport of French Ring (since you referenced it) is dominated by the Malinois?  Funny that a couple of days ago, I was training with a group of @25 different K9's from different departments and the majority  were Malinois.  It was kinda ironic as the Shepherd guys get laughed at because their dogs have to be lifted into the backs of pickup trucks or lifted into the back seats of small SUVs for drug searches and their building searches take twice as long.  But you're right, the Malinois are not all that.  Have you ever watched videos of French Ring?  Or better yet, witnessed it live?  Show me a VA dog that can make it through the jumping portion before even thinking about the bite phases.

I do Mondio ring and I have a FR3 GSD. My young male is from predominantly FR lines. There are many many FR GSD's in France, and most people do not know that. I didn't until a couple of years ago.

Now for the shameless plug, I have a litter on the ground from my young male, I put a video up of them still not chasing the rag at 17 days. ( a joke).

Ulko's mother is the sister to Esko's grandfather. Those are some nice dogs. Esko will never have to be lifted into anything either. He has done full height on the pallisade since he was 6 months old. (2.3 meters)

You can PM me if you want some more information.

Bit more history on the French Ringand even Campagne originally the GSD and Beauceron were the preferred breeds that dominated the French Ring however following the second World War the german breeds lost favour in France following the unpleasant business of tghe occupation. Hence the move towards the Malinois. Even the early documents on Belgium Ring refer to Rotts and Bouviers.

There are well bred dogs, and well trained dogs, sometimes both but no ultimate breeds and no ultimate sports.

Not really "many, many" Jeff.  Sure there are Shepherds doing Ring in France but by no means are they rivaling the numbers of the Malinois.  The Shepherd did dominate the sport many years ago but since the 60's it has been about the athleticism of the Malinois.  More emphasis has been placed on getting "max" points on the jumps and "fast" entries and "fast" outs.  A "1 second slow to out" will cost you 2.5 pts. whereas a missed entry or "esquive" (not done in Mondio) will cost you just .5.  Many of the French dogs have speed and a touchier nerve quality but not necessarily a full grip, no matter, French Ring does not score "full" grips, just grips.  To compare quality and quantity of breeds competing, just look at the entry at the Coup, dominated by Malinois year after year.  With an entry of 30 dogs, @ 28 will be Malinois, maybe 1 or 2 of them female, 1 will be a GSD and 1 will be a Tervuren.  Look 'em up.

Come to NY I can show you a whole bunch of GSD police K9s that will do any kind of jumping, biting or searching you want.   You can't group a whole breed into one generalization. i have seen far too many Mali's with poor nerves.  I think it's all based on each individual dog, thier genetic makeup, and training they each recieve.

Please don't compare K9's that were sport dog washouts to FRIII dogs at the French Ring Championships.

K9 sport dog wahsouts? Please explain?

So, they are not in the cup, so there are not many many of them ?? : ) There are way more GSD's doing FR than you or I know. I have been looking at pedigrees for the past three years and there are many many doing FR in France. A LOT.

A slow out makes for a sport dog that loses points, but does not make a dog less. Mals are out in front there, and I have never even tried to look up total numbers, but I have seen trials that have 20 dogs that are all GSD on Daily motion. I had no idea at all, I figured that there would be 50 maybe in the whole country. Way more than that.

Look at Esko's pedigree:  http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/pedigree/670111.html

Look at all the ring dogs on his fathers side, and I cannot get the blanks filled, I have asked his breeder to help me out, but that was how long ago ? Not worth trying again.

Look at Basco's pedigree.  http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/pedigree/669849.html

There are a lot of people over in France that are using GSD and the numbers are actually growing.

Laurent Liberal is Esko's breeder, and he is selling a lot of GSD to FR people.

Here in the states, we have such a furry kid mentality that to get a dog, and then not like it is a sin. How dare you ! The reality that I am seeing over there is that people sell dogs because they do not like them, but the dog is a nice dog. Here, the percentages of that happening are not very high at all. There is almost always something not right about the dog.
