How many of you run your dogs on a tread mill, and what are your thoughts on this?

by onedog on 31 December 2010 - 18:12

I do, works great especially in winter.

Do they make one big enough for you and your dog at the same time??.....That might be fun....

We have jog-a-dogs at work I use for regular conditioning.

One thing you must be careful of if you will be exhibiting your dog in conformation is the length of the treadbelt. Some of the short ones for people are too short for most GSDs, they do not have room to fully extend and will therefore clip their front reach. They will become physically conditioned to move with restriction.

Also, you must teach your dog how to move on the treadmill. The first few times I only do it for a few seconds to acclimate the dog, then I start moving the dog at a brisk walk for one minute, adding one minute daily until I reach the desired length of time. Then I start adding a one minute trot after the first 5 minutes of walking, then back to a walk for the remainder of the time. I increase the trotting length by one minute daily up to the desired time, leaving a 5 minute warm up walk and a 5-10 minute cooldown walk.

Lastly, but most importantly, always make sure your dog poops before you put them on the treadmill!

Just don't make the mistake that Cesar Millan made:  http://www.usatoday.com/life/people/2006-05-05-dog-whisperer_x.htm .

ggturner, that link doesn't work. Are you talking about him running puppies on a treadmill? I saw that in one of the few episodes I've seen and it pissed me off.

Perhaps I should add that regular, strenuous condition should not be done under 12 months of age and prior to hip/elbow prelims.

Ok, well, I supposed it should have gone without saying but after reading that link: Never leave a dog unsupervised on a treadmill and certainly don't attach them to it with a choke chain. I use a flat buckle collar or I flip my prong inside out and dead ring it.
