Does the designation "sable" have to include brown in the coloring?  I've always thought it was any streaked/mixed coloring not in the standard pattern.

We've got some pups for sale, most of which are what I'd call sable, with the tan in their coats along with black and some lighter coloring, but there are a couple that are gray/silver and black (not standard), and have no brown or tan at all.  I see that AKC includes gray and bicolor as possiblites.  I think these are still sable, as there is noticeable black in them with the gray, but not 100% sure.

Anybody know?

It would be easier if you would post pictures.

This is "Oehtman" I think his color will get darker as he gets older, I can also tell he will get darker cause he has markings on his toes, and tar heels, which always belongs to a dark sable, can't wait to see just how he morphs!
Oeht has a great structure to him, very thick bones, and he has very dark eyes & a rich pigment all over, his parents have been DNA tested for the DM gene and are normal!
  Oeht kicks butt!!!!

Thank you!  Lotsa variety in those pics.  I think sable still fits our pups in question.  Maybe silver or gray sable.  2nd pup from the right and his sister (unshown) were the ones I had in mind.

I would say the they're all sable. I like the one with it's ears up, cute pups.
