You have alot of reading to do my friend. Do not be discouraged if a lot of folks do not respond. Learn as much as you can from reading many sources. A lot of info obtained on this board are the opinions of folks. Some of which is not based on a whole lot of experience or personal knowledge but reashing what they heard someone else say. Start with you own dogs pedigrees and do google and youtube searches. Below are a couple of sights to start you off.

In working line when the wall split, West German Shepherds for work were beginning to go away..that is why there aren't many breeders who say the have west german working line, only west german show line which today is one of the most popular in Germany.
East German on the other hand are DDR.
If you want to talk to someone about working line, talk to Hans Prager. He is like the total ambassador of the breed when it comes to working line, he knows absolutely everything..and he is a very good breeder, he actually lives not too far from me..and I have seen some of his dogs before from clients..they are just beautiful with great workability!
Good luck on you studying..
Honestly the way I studied for the showline was looking at pedigrees of breeders. By doing this ( I probably looked at thousands of them), I looked for the ones I kept seeing that people used. I became more and more familiar with the names, and I began to question breeders why they used this particular dog, or how was it an improvement of the breed. If you look around on pedigrees and just seriously take a lot of time to do this, you will see dogs being used, and you will see the popular ones, and you will just become more familiar with them..
Also, again if I am not mistaken, breeders of working line usually mix like DDR with Czech for example so it may not be 100% DDR, or something else..I have seen this before..but there are a lot of pure ones as well.
GOOD LUCK!
