Wolfiesmom

by Wolfiesmom on 11 December 2010 - 23:12

When Wolfie is outside in the yard, he likes to take logs off the pile and play with them. Lately, he has been making lines and patterns with the logs. He makes straight lines, parallel lines, and zig zag patterns across the yard. I tried to get pictures of the entire pattern, but when he saw me coming outside, he ran through his creations, and messed them up. I did take pictures of what he didn't mess up. Has anyone ever seen their dog make patterns with things? Wolfie also makes piles of like things in the house ie: all bones in one pile, all stuffed toys in another all balls in yet another pile..

That sounds like he is a very organised dog...heheh my puppy on the other hand is making a mess of my house and all I do is clean.. I wish he placed things in piles...

I had never heard of a dog doing this!

I had seen something similar on TV a while back; somekind of amazing pet show. I think it was some kind of lab mix if I remember me right. This dog was arranging his toys in lines, parallels, triangles, circles and piles. Owner did not teach the dog, the behavior just "showed up" one day.

I've heard of this from time to time. Sometimes in anecdotes, and occasionally in books about canine behavior.

There was a humours book, arguable to be taken with a grain of salt, that was with supposed examples of canine sculptures. It was called "Dog Works; the Magic and Meaning of Canine Construction."

I'm glad at least someone has heard of this before. I didn't teach him this either. He just started doing this on his own.  I'm going to look up that book.

I had heard of a bored GSD taking all the china out of a cupboard & lining it up on the sofa of the owner while the owner was at work. Not a piece broken, just all carefully lined up on her couch when she got home. Needless to say, she was not thrilled, because the dog would not wash or return them, LOL!
And someone on the PDB just recently was telling how her dog goes through her purse & places certain items on her bed, I thought it was lipstick, but I could be mistaken.
These sound like highly intelligent, bored dogs. Maybe there is some sort of activity with which you could engage your dog's creative behaviour? Sounds to me like you've got someone just a yearnin' to do some learnin'! LOL! Good Luck with your budding artist,  jackie harris

Jackie, you have a point... He has class on Mondays, and it was Saturday when he made his log creations. I take him on walks, play fetch with him,  and practice obedience during the week. We also do hide and seek, and I hide treats on him and he finds thems in the house. I am with Wolfie all the time as I am a stay at home Mom. His trainer thinks he should get into protection work.

My fiance had a working line dog, and once we let his sister watch him when we were out of town. He kept taking pears off a tree in the backyard, and put them in a pile under a rocking chair in the living room.

I saw the show about the artistic dog, it was a doberman and they video taped it doing this.  Amazing.  My dog doesn't do anything like this at all.  I guess she isn't gifted. LOL

Lol my foster whenever we gave him a bone or something to chew on we always wondered how he ate it so fast. Then one day we were digging hole to plant trees and we found more then a hundred bones/rawhides/chews in on area in the yard. He dug them up so well too, the ground was smooth and all lol
