I am by no means new to housebreaking a puppy, but by golly this new puppy is going to make me crazy.  I've had her a week now, though we have only been home a few days.  She has no preference to where she uses the bathroom.  If I put her out she will do her business right in front of the door, or she will be outside for awhile and come inside and find one of the few spots of carpet in the house and go to the bathroom.  Shr just doesn't seem to be catching on.  I can take her out as soon as she wakes up, or every 15 minutes and she will squat to pee, but she will come back in and pee again.  I've been washing floors and scrubbing carpet non stop.

All of my other Shepherds have been a breeze in comparasin to Janna.  Ace, who isn't even 4 months old has never had an accident in the house.

HELP.  I'm open to suggestions or books or anything.

We have had a bit of success this evening.  I put Janna on a long leash and have been keeping her attached to me.  We have managed to avoid incident in the last couple of hours.

I guess we were lucky. It only took 3 days to housebreak Stori. All we did was use the crate when we couldn't be right there to watch her and take her outside every two hours or so. One other trick we used was to say" Pee Pee in the grass" (wifes choice of words lol) as she was going pee outside. Now when we want her to go, like before we go to bed at night, we take her outside and say pee pee in the grass and she squats and goes. Works for us.

Yeah....all of my other GSDs and other dogs have housebroken easily.  Between rescues and my own dogs we have had about 10 dogs pass through our home in the last 13 years (7 of them have lived here until the end of their lives) and honest to goodness Janna has been the most difficult.

If I could just teach a dog to ring a bell as a way to tell me to let them outside Id be too happy

Are you using a deodouriser when you have scrubbed the carpets and floor,
i use a crate when house breaking all the time the pup is at rest, and take her out ever half hour, they are not allowed free run of the house or the garden, and i often have one small area for them to pee i keep them in the area, if they are not peeing or pooping i will play a game with them till they go they learn to be quick their work and releive imideatly with in 2 weeks
good luck hope she gets the message soon x

Yes, I use an enzyme cleaner and I actually clean with a carpet shampooer with the hand attachment so I can get as much out as possible.

Knock on wood, we haven't had an accident since I posted this topic.  Things seem to have maybe clicked, and the leash is working well.  It keeps her right beside me so I can catch her cues before she goes, and she is whining so I have been the problem not her.  I guess it was so easy with Ace because I was staying with family and their house is large so I had him on a leash 24/7 when inside just so I didn't lose sight of him, and when we got home it was so hot the door was open 24/7 and he figured it all out super fast.  My other Sheps have all been easy to train.  Not as easy as Ace, but still super easy.  Now it's cool and rainy out and Janna really doesn't want to go outside.....But things seem to be turning around.

ace.....if she pees this often maybe she has a bladder issue bacterial infection...my girl from day 1 was great at keeping it outside then 2 weeks into living with us started peeing in the kitchen right in the middle...drove me crazy i thought i did something, then turns out she testes positive for bacterial infection, i put her on antibiotics and used cream on her belly to prevent infected pee or tall grass w/ pee on it  from re effecting her..it was some ointment i bough from Pets Smart for bacterial infections..2 days later she was back to normal, no more accidents...
Don't know if this will help...it's just a option...
