One of my clients has two GSDs, purchased before he saught out training. One is W.G. show lines, one is American. Neither happen to work well, and the American GSD jumps if a leaf blows, so they are not the best at bitework :-) And the client now knows. But he wants a third dog for protection, and has done volumes of internet research on his next dog.
The internet just gives fuel to their poor decisions. They read about a novel breed, and pretty much EVERY descrp. is "Very faithful and loyal, great with training and leadership, highly intelligent, active but not hyper, fearless and bold..." Yeah that's like an astrology reading, it could apply to anyone. Then the next step is to Google "_____ Breeder" and then buy, then bring their 'monstrosity' for training to us.
HIM: "I want another dog for protection, what do you think of me getting a Cane Corso?"
ME: "No, too defensive and most we see are fearful. f.y.i. they drool."
ME: "Are you sure? They are a handfull, very active, maybe not the best with your young kids in the household."
HIM: "OK, and they are not very good looking anyways. How about a Dutch Shepherd." (BTW, I think my Mali is beautiful, thank-u-verymuch
)
ME: "Same as a Malinois. Only brindle."
HIM: "Oh yeah? Ok, well another one I am considering is a Caucasian Ovcharka, what about those?"
ME: "You live in the city. You have close neighbors and only a moderarte yard, bad idea. And they're more for property guarding anyway, not for bitework and send-offs. Oh yeah, and they're 130 lbs and shed like warewolves."
HIM: "Awwe. Ok, how about a South African Boerboel? I saw them online and the website said they were great for protection and great with kids."
ME: **Forehead slap.** If the breeders website said it, it must be true. Yeah they are practically babysitters, just let your baby ride them like a pony Oh yeah, and they are man-stopping killers, too, according to the websites.
HIM: "I looked into wolf-hybrid mixes, but...."
ME: "EH, this conversation is over."
GET A WELL-BRED SHEPHERD, THEY ARE THE BEST ALL-AROUND WORKING AND FAMILY DOG YOU CAN GET!!!!!!!!!! But just because he has 2 "not-so-good" ones, he thinks the whole breed is no good.
Anything you want can be found within a German Shepherd breed, they really are awesome
How much y'all wanna bet that he shows up here next time with some sort of weird freakin' newly created breed of dog for us to train?

It was a funny conversation. I pretty much shot down every breed he asked.

........................Ok forget it, I tried and can't figure out how to make a picture show up, blah, time to sleep.

When I get people asking me about the more exotic breeds being better for for home personal protection than a GSD, I just point out if they were any good the police would be using them.

Sounds like your client wants a dog that's not only a visual deterrent, but also exotic and a challenge to keep.
How about a Spanish Alano. http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/alanoespanol.htm This is an ancient breed molosser dog whose 2nd job is boar hunting. This is not a natural guard dog, but recently it has found its way into guard and protection work. It interesting to note in its temperament: "The Alano will fight to the death to follow orders, fighting the wild boar or the bull until the end. They are a fearless, loyal, devoted, hard worker. Well-balanced & stable, self-confidant with a very high pain threshold. Powerful and protective, but not aggressive. These characteristics of the breed are not fully apparent until the animal reaches full maturity, which usually happens when the dog reaches 2 1/2 years old or older. Because this breed is bred to function in packs as a team, he is good and sociable around other dogs. Enjoying a good romp, playing and just having fun. However, the Alano will not back down if challenged by them. The Alano Espanol, like all mastiff type breeds, should have a dominant owner who understands instinctual canine behaviors".
More so than with GSD's or Mali's, he'd probably have to import from Spain to get a top specimen. While I probably wouldn't own one, I'd love to see one in SchH or IPO. BTW, the Alano is one of the very few molosser breeds that do not drool, slobber or snore.

What ever kinda dog he gets I would be concerned if he is gonna put in the work. And sounds like a revolving door situation potentially for a dog if he is that flighty with what kinda dog is gonna be around his kids.

Doberdoodle,
PM me. I am in Chicago also.
I am working on placing a 3 year old male Rottweiler for a friend of a co-worker.
He will need some work, but, it can be accomplished.
The dog is very safe around other dogs, but, not at all around humans he doesn't know.
He will eat someone's ass if given the opportunity.
He would have done that to me over the weekend if he wasn't muzzled.
Let me know. The dog is free.
