Hi, dont want any involvement with threads about U.K. backbiting, but really need advice on how to control my male Shepherd. I just cannot hold him if he spots another dog, he just drags me along, bearing in mind he is 43 kgs. and I m 9 and a half stone female! I ve been to training with him since he was a puppy and he was fine then, and have tried the Halti which he just will not accept, he just lies down and wont move when wearing it. I went to visit my friend in Spain who has a kennel there and was advised to try a pinch collar, but it looks too painful so its still in its wrapping in cupboard! Has anyone had any experience with this type of collar, or can suggest a way to stop him pulling me towards other animals etc. as he also barks and becomes aggressive towards other dogs, even females. Strangely enough he will not bother to guard my house, even if someone knocks on the door, day or night! He has not been neutered and lives with my 10 yr. old Shepherd who is very placid but does manage to bark if someone knocks at the door! Any ideas would be much appreciated, cheers. Lissa.

Here are some links for you to read regarding the "prong" or "pinch" collars. I use them with my GSD's and they take right to them. It does not hurt them. In fact in my opinion they safer then a chock collar.

lissa I had the same problem as you with my male he is 2 years old I use a pinch collar on him and it works just fine it does not hurt him and he knows he has it on I also put a chain collar on him at the same time and attach the lead to it this works fine for me good luck

Shostring, thanks for the info. I am going to try and see how he is, I have no control over him otherwise, think its just that my dog trainer thinks its wrong, but she doesnt have to walk him! I f I can walk him wearing this collar it would be great, and at least he gets proper excercise for an hour or so, twice daily with less stress for me and him, cheers, Lissa

Make sure you put the pinch on properly. It's supposed to fit up high on the neck and be snug to work well.

Also make sure you use a backup collar so you don't end up with a leash in your hand, and a dog three blocks away.
After that, you might want to consider doing some obedience work with the dog.

You mentioned that you have a trainer for you and the dog.
What do you work oon in training?
Seeing that yous looks dog aggressive has the trainer tried working on this particular aspect? If they feel it is wrong then they should be able to show you how to control him without it.

hi there, the prong collar is THE only collar for walking your dog.i can walk my three(in my avatar) all at once and never a problem.all three are excellent on the choke, when walked individually, never pull at anything...But walk them together(on chokes) and all hell breaks loose, when they see cats or other dogs(pack mentality, plus they've been attacked several times by other dogs, usually terriers,I HATE terriers!
.i tried halti-type products and they work, but then everybody thinks your dogs are vicious, coz you have them "muzzled".
once they have the prong on they are perfect!
Its the way to go and much easier on (wo)man and beast!

Maybe a new trainer too! You want a trainer who can teach you the right and safe ways of using a prong collar. There are many different prong/pinch collars.
I use it because I do not want a crushed larynx or other damage to his neck and throat. He is a dedicated puller and occasionally reactive and it would take extreme measures to change him.
This is a good collar and will not harm him. He doesn't mind wearing it. When I say "collar" he puts his head out so I can put it on easily. This one is not a martingale.
I have a large, very powerful and driven male shepherd. When I walk him in town or go into stores or coffee houses, I always use the Herm Sprenger stainless prong collar with a buckle.
Here is a picture of the one I use-because it is easy and the buckle clicks into place like a flat collar.

I bought mine on eBay from someone in England. I have another one in courigan that I bought from Wittmer Tyson when I belonged to Menlo Park Schutzhund. A lot of members had that collar and it made eveything better.
