Hello, i have been directed to this site by my breeder. Can you tell me why the breed hip score (average) has gone down from 30 in the 1960's to 20 in the 1990's? I am not sure what this means.

Hi Doris

There were no averages  in the 1960's because the scoring scheme did not start until the 1970's.  The average used to be around 18 then and has gone up to around 20 now.  Where did you get the figure 30 from?

Thank you, my breeder said it used to be 30. i have a long coat bitch from her and her hip score is 26 and she said that i could breed with her and i'm not so sure.

How did you manage to show a photo of your dog so i can show mine?

Hi Doris

Your breeder is probably talking about the recommended maximum hip scores for breeding, originally the maximum scores were something like 35 for a bitch and 25 for a dog.  The idea was to select mates with very low scores to compensate for higher scoring animals, but there is really no need to breed from animals with the higher hip scores these days, there are plenty of good ones with low scores and certainly no shortage of puppies available.

You can post pics using the "insert image" icon that looks like a yellow envelope or the avatar bit in your profile (can't remember how it works, but it must be easy or I wouldn't have been able to do it).

Thank you Margaret, i will give the photo a go. my breeder said that i could put my girl to a low scoring dog, she has one and i'd be ok, but i've been on the kennel club and they no and my vet said no. she is lovely and i think that the breeder is telling lies.

Hi Doris

Fact is, even two low scoring dogs is no guarantee the pups will be ok.  Your breeder may not be deliberately lying, just not up to date with what is acceptable.  The way the score is made up can make a difference, I had a dog with a hip score of 10 which sounded very good, but most of it was subluxation which meant he had an unacceptably loose hip and thus he was not used for breeding.

Why do you want to breed your bitch anyway?

I see in the dog papers this week the breed average has gone down from 19 to 17.3.
