What is the difference between both? I thought ot it as pretty much being the same thing but I take it that I am incorrect? It seems like some breeders see it as the same thing while others see it as 2 seperate things.

One is a dog that is a pet and it barks. It is probably only going to bark, and will most likely cur.
The other is a dog that is owned by a cur who needs the dog to help boost their id.

You need to do a Threat Assessment against yourself, then see how the dog would fit into your lifestyle;
Example; Your sister has been serious victim of domestic violence, no one knows where the ex boyfriend is but he remains a serious risk. She lives alone, no children, in the countryside, has no firearms or alarms and Police generally take 30mins to arrive because of the distance. Every few weeks she takes her serious PPD for on going training.
Example 2; Middle Class Family, 2 kids, live in the suberbs, lots of visitors to the home, busy lifestyle etc. Need a dog because they are worried about Burglaries in the area, the husband is often away over night etc. They probably need a dog that looks and sounds the part BUT as it's unlikely to get much continuation training and will predominantly be amongst the family/friends in providing a visual deterrent it should be a different type of animal.
This is what most people actually need but think a PPD is the same, obviously a serious dog is for serious threats.
I hope this explanation is a bit more constructive.

Family protection dog is the same as personal protection dog. It's a biting dog that is protection trained and obedience trained like a police dog but not detection trained.
