I have a 5 months old GSD female that will appear in her first show in oct. She's got a long tail with long hair that does not even touch the ground but 2-3 inches more than that. yesterday a friend of mine who's considered the best breeder in country told that cut the hair of her tail, another friend told that you should cut them coz she'll try to keep her tail above the ground which is not good.
She looks so beautiful with those long hair on her tail. So i was wondering if you could help me, shall i cut them? if yes then how much? and how to cut them? coz i never had an experience doing that, i would appreciate if you post some pic etc.

My girl has long hair that drags on the ground, yet she never lifts it, so I don't know about that one. Is your dog a LSC? Why worry about cutting her tail hair if it doesn't touch the ground? Just curious?

where is the show?
PS. It is your dog, so do what you want to do. If you don't trust then watch and learn for yourself. You will see how it all works. Also make sure your dog is at proper show weight.

I was also told by a well know trainer from Germany a few years ago at a seminar that you cut the tail hairs because some dogs will curl their tail to keep it from brushing up against their legs or on the ground in the case of very long tails.

Always people over here including myself trim off the long point of the tail just below the tail end we do it in a half round
Why'
sometimes if it touches the ground it causes static, plus it looks much better trimmed up without long hair in a point

We keep the tail end hair trimmed while the puppy is growing. Sometimes, when the tail touches the ground the dog will start to hook the tail to the side and it becomes a habit. Most breeders I know do that. As Steve said, don't cut it blunt but half round.
